Arrow ACLU Action Alert: Oppose Taxpayer Subsidies for Religious Schools

Quote:
As Americans continue to debate how best to improve our public education system, congressional leaders continue to push voucher schemes -- sometimes misleadingly referred to as "opportunity scholarships" -- that would siphon tax dollars from public schools to private and religious schools.

* snip *

School voucher schemes would force all taxpayers to support religious beliefs and practices with which they may strongly disagree.
At the heart of these proposals are the goals of commingling church and state in the classroom and diverting public funds to private and parochial schools. Religious schools represent 85 percent of the total private school enrollment in the United States. These schools by their nature combine proselytization with education and therefore should not be funded by taxpayer dollars.

Done! And since my representative is still Jim Kolbe, I will be very interested in seeing how he votes.

Hmm...So I have to pay money to public schools even though my kid goes to a religious school, and when I want the money I PAID to the public school system back to pay for my child's education I can't? wtf that doesn't sound like a very fair situation.

That forces the government to fund a religious organization... and it gives other peoples tax dollars to sectarian schools as well...

You have made a choice to send your children to a private school. Should the public schools suffer funding loss because you opted for a luxury education for your children when a public education was available? I have no children in public schools yet I still pay property taxes. I don't resent supporting the public schools.

My Representative is Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-VA). I'm sure he will be voting for the vouchers. All the more reason to tell him I oppose any such legislation.

Done.
