Default The catholic church and priests

So now the pope is attacking gays. There are estimates that the percentage of gay priests is at least 20% partly because the straight men are leaving to get married. He has already ruled out married priests and women priests. His solution is better recruitment efforts. Yet the number of seminarians is dropping.

The massive drop in the number of seminary students (From 39,638 in 1966 to 4,826 in 1999.) One source says there are fewer than 4,000 in the year 2002.
I find this interesting because my dad was an ordained brother in the church and left to marry my mother. I have a brother-in-law who was a seminarian who left to marry my sister. I grew up hearing my dad predict this crisis of numbers in the priesthood and how the church should allow priests to marry. It just seems like the pope is really backing the church up into a corner.

I think backing up into corners is why they wear those pointy hats.

I thought the Pope only came out against gay marriage, which shouldn't be of any concern to gay priests.

The thought had occured to me that taking an incentive for gay priests to leave by banning gay marriage may be part of the plan.

The most recent time the child molestation scandals broke, some representatives of the church blamed it on the "infiltration" of the priesthood by gays. Because, of course, someone who abuses a child is automatically gay in their worldview.
