A quick internet search turns up bunches of goofy conspiracy-type crap. I'm looking for information a bit more serious.
As I take an amillenialist view of Revelation I do not believe that 666 has any 'secret' meaning. (The Bible does not contain secrets-it is the reverse, very open.)

Certain numbers such as 3, 7 and 10 denoted perfection. 666 is 'almost perfect' but not quite. It falls short. It is the number of imperfection.

Evil is not always in direct opposition to good. Evil imitates good at times but not completely. In Revelation there is also reference to the beast looking like one who had been slain (my paraphrasing). Also Pharoh's magicians could also emulate Moses plagues but not all.

Do a search on 'gematria' for more information.

This is from a search on the secweb:
This is fascinating stuff! I grew up in a fairly intellectual version of Calvinist evangelicalism but have never heard this before.

I remember doing a mini-course on the book of Revelation as part of high-school Sunday school--would be very interesting to revisit those interpretations. I might have the notes buried somewhere (if, of course, I haven't burned them by now) ...
