There are pro-CSS Xians. It's rare, but happens. Most of them think that forcing religion on someone is a fairly empty act.

As I understand it, the first fundie infection of American ideology was manifest destiny.

Buffman,

I've already used it in a argument on another board!

Yes they do exist and I think that it's a very good idea for us to get to know who they are.

This is one that I ran into a little while ago.

<a href="http://www.bjcpa.org/index.html" target="_blank">Baptist Joint Committee</a>

Quote:
The mission of the Baptist Joint Committee is to defend and extend God-given religious liberty for all, bringing a uniquely Baptist witness to the principle that religion must be freely exercised, neither advanced nor inhibited by government.

"No voice at the intersection of church and state has been more consistent, reliable and sensible during the past six decades than that of the Baptist Joint Committee. That's why no voice today is more trusted. As we face the challenges of the year 2000 and beyond, we recommit ourselves to the proven principle that the separation of church and state is the best way to ensure religious liberty for all."

I have listed this group before, but they deserve constant recognition. Just place "Church-State Separation" in their search engine.

<a href="http://www.interfaithalliance.org/" target="_blank">http://www.interfaithalliance.org/</a>

What the current public and our, so-called, elected representatives do not seem to comprehend is that it was the minority Christian denominations of the revolutionary era that spoke out so loudly and in support of the separation of religion and government. They had first hand experience and knowledge of what constraints one denomination would heap on another if they had the backing of the government. At one time, nine of the 13 colonies had a Protestant, Christian, state established, church which made life nearly intolerable for any other Christian denomination that preached a differing dogma/message. The Pilgrams, of whom our Senators seem so proud, were some of the most intolerant and bigoted Christians ever looking for economic, not religious, freedom to arrive in the New World. (They left a country who had provided them complete religious freedom...the Netherlands.) Catholic Christians were not even allowed in most colonies. Christian bigotry, bias and prejudice reigned supreme prior to the Revolutionary period.

How many times must Madison's words be repeated before Americans understand the clarity and accuracy of their meaning?

""Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other Sects?" ("Memorial and Remonstrance" --James Madison)

Buffman,

That's a good one. From their webpage:

Quote:
The Interfaith Alliance works to ensure that the religious traditions and heritage of all Americans are protected. We work toward a pluralistic society where people of all faiths - and those who identify with no faith - are welcome; where no one faith receives preferential treatment and our religious diversity is celebrated. We reject the use of religion as a political weapon. We work to refute the claim that the only true American outlook is to subscribe to a narrow and exclusive vision of a "Christian America."
By the way, may I quote your statement above on another website if the need arises?

Public forum. Public post. Do with them whatever you think best. (I keep hoping that I will provide accurate knowledge that will be useful.)
