Exactly so. I'll never forget the first day of sixth grade, when a friend of mine returned from his vacation in Florida. That was in the 1950's, when segregation was legal in the South and a fact of life in the North. He told the class of how he had been expelled from a Florida swimming pool because his tan had become so dark. His italian ancestry given him a slightly darker skin than many whites and an inkling of what it was like to be on the other side of discrimination. The lifeguards didn't believe him when he protested that he was white.

Remember my reference to The Jeffersons ? A running joke in the series was how the rich George Jefferson had a white British butler (Pat Kilbane) and some of the farcical situations that arose from that situation.
George had a black maid. Florence. Really lazy and would gang up on him with his wife, Louise (Leezy to fans). The white 'butler' was probably the doorman of the building. He was not George's servant.
