Hmm... If that's true, then nobody can understand God. Including, presumably, St Augustine. In which case, why quote him?

Was Augustine into Zen? Sounds like it.

My Confirmation name was Augustine.

Women should not be enlightened or educated in any way. They should, in fact, be segregated as they are the cause of hideous and involuntary erections in holy men.
-- Augustine

Nothing so casts down the manly mind from it's height as the fondling of women and those bodily contacts which belong to the married state.
-- Augustine [Tell that to the poets who found so much inspiration in fornication. ]

It is indeed better (as no one ever could deny) that men should be led to worship God by teaching, than that they should be driven to it by fear of punishment or pain; but it does not follow that because the former course produces the better men, therefore those who do not yield to it should be neglected. For many have found advantage (as we have proved, and are daily proving by actual experiment), in being first compelled by fear or pain, so that they might afterwards be influenced by teaching, or might follow out in act what they had already learned in word.
-- Augustine,

Yes, Augustine was a total shit, for which he was sainted -- that sort of goes without saying. He argued that using force against people of other beliefs was perfectly ok. A useful justification for the Church.

Dear Gemma,
Where do you get all this incredible stuff. You are absolutely wasting your young studying the weird lives of insignificant people. Don't you know that the real reason for Saints is that the church needs them from time to time to stir religious zeal??
Imagine you having an organization running on the belief in a “godly” being whom never ever replies to whatever you ask or say.
The solution to that is the regular creation of saints. They still do it today. Now the occasion is more like, "how can we distract our believers from the pedophilia cover-up scandal"?
Oh yes, don't we have this deranged monk Padre Pio who is due for Sainthood. let's make sure he performs 9posthumously) a miracle.
The way you are behaving, be carefull that you don't come on their canonization list.
But if you do, I am prepared to miraculously convert to get you your Sainthood. You deserve it. <img src="graemlins/notworthy.gif" border="0" alt="[Not Worthy]" />
