Hadn't heard anything before you posted this, but it does sound typical of my neighbors.

I don't stand for the pledge, I don't get suspended... although then again, the principle detained me in the office for a day since he thought I'd be planning a columbine-scale massacre since I was an atheist, the counselors watch me all the time behind my back...

"We honor every kid's religion and every kid's belief."

Funny, that's not the impression that I got from the article.

"They know as well as anybody we can't make them do the pledge. We just ask them to stand where they won't be singled out" for ridicule by other students.
So suspending them from school is gonna keep them from being singled out?

Quote:
"If their parents don't want them inside the room during the Pledge of Allegiance, they can stand outside the room," Parker said
Yeah, good thing we don't want them to be singled out.

See the following for applicable case law:

WEST VIRGINIA STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION v. BARNETTE, 319 U.S. 624 (1943)

LEE v. WEISMAN, 505 U.S. 577 (1992)

I sent this to the letters column of the AJC. We'll see if it gets a response.
Quote:
When two Adairsville High School freshmen were suspended last Wednesday for refusing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance, Principal Larry Parker said, "We just ask them to stand where they won't be singled out" for ridicule by other students. He also stated "If their parents don't want them inside the room during the Pledge of Allegiance, they can stand outside the room," That's logical. Suspend the students, or make them stand in the hallway because they don't share majoritarian religious or political beliefs. That will certainly prevent them being singled out for ridicule by the other students since the adminstration has already done so.

Principal Parker says, "We honor every kid's religion and every kid's belief." Apparently this honor does not extend to those who reject all superstition, or those that believe that religious rituals and oaths of loyalty have no place in a classroom full of children who often have neither the will nor the understanding to refuse or assent to whatever indoctrination the school proposes to impose. The two young ladies are owed an apology, as are the students who witnessed this abuse of their consitutional liberties, and Principal Parker and his board are owed a trip to court.

I had this economics professor when I was in highschool who was a born again xian and recovering alcohalic. Everyday I would sit in my seat whenever everyone got up for the pledge and he would mutter somthing like f*ckin no good kid and give me the eye. Then one day he came in blitz as hell smellin of wild turkey and called me out in front of the class. Needless to say I made an utter fool out of him, nothing physical I was quite cordial. I ended up being suspened. A lot of verbal repartee with the principal and then the school board later I was allowed back into school. It was more then worth it and I'd do it again if givin the chance.

I also met my ex-girlfriend while in suspension so good things can come outta shit like this, but she did turn out to be a bitch so I dont know.
