Default Cow, Bee Genome Projects...

According to article Cowabunga!, the cow-genome project still has to raise $15 million before cow-genome sequencing can start.

Its estimated cost if $50 million for sequencing all 3 billion base pairs; the NHGRI has pledged $25 million, and the Texas state government $10 million. So can anyone spare $15 million?

In other genome news, the honeybee-genome project is coming along nicely. Sequence accumulation is due to be done this month, and an assembly next month. So in the next few months, we may see some big news on that subject.

Sequencing of the chimp genome is supposed to have started, but I have not seen much news on that.

But we may find out more when the human-genome effort is wrapped up by next month or so; I'm sure that the various sequencing labs will announce what they will be working on next.

And here are NHGRI's sequencing priorities:

Chicken: High
Chimp: High
Cow: High
Dog: High
15 Fungi: High
Honeybee: High
Oxytricha trifallax (ciliate) macronucleus: High
Pig: High *
Sea Urchin: High
Tetrahymena thermophila (ciliate) macronucleus: High
Rhesus Macaque: High *

Amphioxus: Moderate *
Cat: Moderate *
Trichoplax adhaerens (primitive metazoan): Moderate *

The * indicates the most recent additions or updates.

Some months back, the NHGRI folx were not sure which ones to pick of dog, cat, cow, and pig genomes; it looks like they've picked all four.

I'm sure industry will spring for the last 15 mil., I'm surprised that they haven't already.

You what's amazing is that mammal genomes like a cow can now be sequenced for relative peanuts. Wasn't the human genome project billions?

50 million...genomes come cheap these days...
