Lightbulb This is how gods are born

In Tamil Nadu, a South Indian state, a film-actress cum politican is enthusiastically worshipped by her fans. They have built temples to her name and worship her as a living deity. Miracles have not happened yet, but give it time.

One of her fans had vowed that he would sacrifice his tongue at the shrine of a god if the actress won the recent elections this year. She did and he did. No Christian martyr could have done better!

One part of my mind wants to kick the fans. The rest of me is tremendously excited --- this is how gods are created by men. I am actually watching the whole mythmaking proccess.

Great story! Hinduwoman, please continue to track this story for us. I'd particularly like to know when and how the first miracle stories appear.

Also, is this woman the former head of the Tamil Nadu State, a short chubby little authoritarian? When I was there in '91 she was already a controversial figure. Sorry, can't remember her name, no good with Indian names...

Joseph Smith has demonstrated that its easier than that. Simply claim that one existed years ago, and watch the believers line up.

hinduwoman is referring to the current chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalitha. It would be interesting to find out how much of this adulation she receives is a result of actual fans of hers and how much is out of fear. She is renowned in India for her bullying tactics. I have lived in that part of the world for quite some time and she was a terror. Even the press had faced her wrath many times as a result of their openly criticizing her. I guess this all makes her an even better candidate for a future god - you know, "fire and brimstone shall rain down" and "the righteous wrath of the lord" - that kind of thing.

This incident you relate however seems to be one of unadultrated hero worship. Good story.

He did it because it was proved to him it was the truth! He waited until the god delivered the goods --- gave the victory to his leader --- and then only paid up!
