Default What do Christians and Atheist Agree On?

I maintain that in general Christians and Atheist agree on nothing--therefore making both camps wrong. Atheist see no value, genrally speaking, in Christian scriptures. Christians are blinded by their belifs and in the supernatural to the point that they rarely are capable of seeing their belief in philosphical terms--and most even dismiss christian philosophy out of hand which would be the only value atheist could find in christianity if they could get passed their won prejuduces.

I think many Christians and atheists would agree it's overly simplistic to define them all this way.

They can agree on everything except for the role of Jesus and the existence of God, or they can disagree on everything.

Why?

Theists and atheists agree on a lot of things in regards to morality and ethics. The reasons why they believe them are quite distinct, however. Theists generally perceive everything to be about God, regardless of any consistency. Atheists use naturalistic explanations to explain these same things.

I don't think it's fair to generalize people like that.

I know a few Christians, who probably don't see any value in the Bible either.

Not at all... there is great value to be had from Christian scriptures, in the New Testament at least.

One must simply filter out all the ridiculous stuff, and what is left is actually pretty decent moral theory, more or less. I don't agree with it 100%, but there is definitely wisdom there.

Likewise, there is wisdom to be found in the writings of other faiths as well... one just has to look a little further to find it sometimes, and be a bit -- shall we say -- "loose" with the interpretation.

Thomas Jefferson, while not an atheist, still rejected revealed religions... yet found much to be gained from the Bible as a source of moral philosophy, even going to the extent of writing his own version of the Bible with all the silly supernatural stuff omitted.

Saying that atheists see no value in Christian scriptures, even generally speaking, is a false statement.

I agree. As a historical document it provides great insight to past events and the mindset of ancient man. There's even some good moral stories in there, but nothing extraordinary, IMO.

You would be wrong. You treat Christians like carton characters. They are a very diverse group running from the very irrational and superstitious to the quite rational with a little faith on the side. In fact I'd say that Christians and atheists agree on more than they disagree.

There are trivial things they agree on. That is they have the same opinion about all gods but one. The sun rises in the east. and so on.

There are more substantive things. Generally, atheists and Christians agree that the "Golden Rule" is a good thing. Atheists and Chrsitians would like their children to grow up in crime free non-violent neighborhoods. They agree that freedom is better than oppression.

Most Christians adopt to a significant degree a naturalistic worldview. If a Christian is sick, he/she will go to the (naturalistic) doctor and accept anti-biotics (naturalistic) or what have you. If he/she breaks a leg then they will insist on an X-Ray (naturalistic) and be taken to the (naturalistic) hospital. On the way if its raining the Chrsitian will accept that the (naturalistic) weather-person said a front was coming in and thus the rain. (a naturalistic explanation.) The Chrsitian would laugh if I told him the rain was a result of "war between the gods with thunder as their cries."

Note: yes I do realize that there are exceptions to the medical story above but they are wild minorities so much so that they often are reported in the press.

The fact is that Chrsitians will generally agree with more important things than they will disagree.
