Default Clueless sheriff provides free prison labor to Scientologists

Inmates did renovation work at Scientology church

Quote:
Sheriff Patrick M. Gallivan, questioned Thursday by The Buffalo News about a government agency providing free labor to a church, removed the prison crew from the building several hours later.

"He decided to pull them until they resolve this," said Mary Murray, a spokeswoman for the sheriff.

Gallivan earlier told The News that, while he had a firm policy that prison crews could only provide labor to county departments and non-profit groups, he had never thought about the longtime tradition of separating church and state.

How is this a CSS issue? More like "bloodthirsty, moneygrubbing cult and state" issue.

It's a CSS issue because $cientology is recognized as a religion by the IRS (which is where it counts). And because Scientology uses the protections of the First Amendment to get away with business practices that would not be legal for a secular business.

Besides, there is a lot less blood on the hands of Scientology than on most other religions. Scientology did not burn anyone at the stake for heresy, did not launch any crusades, and has not started any wars with competing sects of other Scientologists. Nor have they assassinated any medical doctors who hold the wrong opinion on church doctrine. Given a choice between Scientology and Christian Reconstructionism, I'd take Scientology any day.

I posted a link to this story on a board that is a neo-con nesting place. I wanted to get the reaction of the "it's freedom OF, not FROM" crowd to this situation. I wanted to see how those "core principles" they are so strident about would be applied in this case.

No luck. Total silence.

Apparently their shepherds have not yet told them what they think about this issue.
