Post Billy Graham:My Answer column

This is sydicated in the local paper(Indianapolis Star).
I read this column daily 'cause it's good for a chuckle or two.
Behold as Billy sets the scoffer straight:

What a dumbass.

Thumbs down

That's the first time I've ever heard a non-believer compared to a flat-earther because he doesn't believe in god.

Dear C.B. :
I'm sorry you feel this way -- and yes, you are probably right: No one could convince you God exists, not in your present frame of mind. And the reason is simple: Your mind is closed to new ideas.
I see. 2000-year-old mystery religions adapted from earlier folk beliefs are now considered "new ideas." Simple... indeed!

I've heard it before. In fact, in the space of about a week I heard it two or three times last year (it was that memorable). Arianna Huffington included the comparison in one of her columns about... oh I forget. She might have been joking anyway.

But it did strike me as odd then. It's not that it's a totally invalid comparison (from a certain POV), but it's so close to being nonsense that you'd expect only imbeciles would use it.

Unfortunately, statements like this do invite the obvious responses.

What, like 'gee, that's a legimate opinion given the evidence'?

Is that what you had in mind?

Seems to me that evidence is irrelevant to anyone who says "no one will ever convince me".

Dear Mr. Graham:
I think Christianity is just a bunch of fairy tales. I don't see how anybody can believe in God, not if they have any sense. [...]
Dear C.B. : [...]
This is why I challenge you to look at the evidence honestly. Take one of the Gospels -- such as John -- and read it with an open mind and heart. When you do, you will discover not only that God exists, but that He loves us and wants us to know Him.
Earth to Graham! He said not if they have any sense. Reading a gospel passage and waiting for an emotion isn't sense or evidence, unless being in love is a sensible reason to believe in Cupid.
