Shame about Maher. Instead of using his "megaphone" to correct a common misunderstanding, looks like he simply reinforced an incorrect definition.

However, I suppose that religious people are far more comfortable with an atheist that calls himself an agnostic. In fact, I know quite a few people, personally, that tend to present themselves the same way.

I think you're missing his point, namely, that many vocal self-proclaimed atheists are obstreperous, truculent dickweeds with whom even an obstreperous, truculent dickweed like Maher would avoid associating.

Perhaps, but you unless he meant to pin those descriptions on atheists in general, I think my observation stands.
