What would you say to an Xian who believes references to 70AD in the gospels are prophecy rather than reportage?

i dont know. it all comes down to what is more believable i guess. the same ideas show up in rabbinic judaism using the same source - daniel chapter 9. the jewish tradition identifies specific historical names as being established through prophesy. must these claims also be accepted? if so what was so special about jesus

I think it was religious evangelism and still is. Translations seem to be a major problem.

Or perhaps, what one prefers to believe. Certainly, the people claiming to be scholars who, for over half a century, have, in effect, confidently stated that prophecy could not have been involved, had a preference.

None must be accepted; or rejected. Scholarship eschews choice in such matters, and sticks to facts. 'What is more believable' is for the reader to decide; and readers tend to know when they are being directed, especially today.

One thing can be said: he, or his legend, has made an awful lot of people look silly. At best.

Yes. How can one 'translate' a shibboleth, and distinguish it from a sibboleth ???
Yet men will keep on trying..........and dying in their worthless effort.

We know why the Jesus story was written. It was written to show that the Jews REJECTED the Son of God and caused him to be crucified therefore their Temple was destroyed and Jerusalem made desolate.

Hippolytus' Expository Treatise Against the Jews
Quote:
But because you covered the eyes of Christ, (and ) thus you beat Him, for this reason, too, you bend your back for servitude always. And whereas you poured out His blood in indignation, hear what your recompense shall be: “Pour out Your indignation upon them, and let Your wrathful anger take hold of them; ”and, “Let their habitation be desolate,” to wit, their celebrated temple.

7. But why, O prophet, tell us, and for what reason, was the temple made desolate?....... it was because they killed the Son of their Benefactor...
In the short-ending gMark, Jesus DELIBERATELY spoke in parables so that the OUTSIDERS would NOT understand him.

And Now Isaiah 6
Quote:
9 And he said , Go , and tell this people, Hear ye indeed , but understand not; and see ye indeed , but perceive not. 10 Make the heart of this people fat , and make their ears heavy , and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert , and be healed .

11 Then said I, Lord, how long?

And he answered , Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant , and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate...
The Jesus story was written to BLAME the Jews, the Victims, for the Fall of the Temple and the Desolation of Jerusalem.

So as to make an example out of their unbelief to a likewise stiff-necked, quarreling, and unbelieving world.
A world that is likewise destined to be overcome and be brought down by its spiritual blindness.

It may be the complete opposite--mankind is being blinded by those who claim to be spiritual.

Please, tell me who did Galileo blind???

Please tell me who attempted to BLIND Mankind to the IDEAS of Galileo.

Spirituality is BLINDING mankind from reality.

The Spiritual wants BLIND followers.

Now, Jesus in the short-ending Mark does NOT teach that he would DIE for the Sins of mankind like gJohn's Jesus.

Examine the words of Jesus in gJohn.

John 3:16 NIV
Quote:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life...
NO LOVE of God can be found in the short-ending gMark for the Killing of Jesus.

Sinaiticus gMark 8
Quote:
31 And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be put to death, and rise after three days.
Nothing is taught about God's Love and the Sacrifice of Jesus in gMark.

Sinaiticus gMark 9
Quote:
31 For he taught his disciples and said to them that the Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and when he has been killed he will rise after three days.

32 But they understood not the saying, and were afraid to ask him.
There is NOTHING about God's Love for the crucifixion of Jesus in gMark.

Sinaiticus gMark 10
Quote:
......And taking the twelve aside again he began to tell them the things that were about to befall him:

33 Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be delivered to the chief of priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles,

34 And they shall mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and put him to death, and after three days he shall rise..
The earliest Jesus story is NOT about the Love of God for the Killing of Jesus--it is about the fulfillment of so-called Prophecies.

The early gMark' Jesus came to CONFUSE the Jews so that they would NOT be converted.

Jesus did NOT want the outsiders to know he was the Son of God, the Christ and Deliberately spoke in Parables.

But, how long must this confusion go on???

Until The Temple has fallen and Jerusalem made desolate. See Isaiah 6.

The earliest Jesus story was written to show Prophecies were fulfilled--the Jews killed Jesus the son of God and his FATHER allowed the Romans to destroy his OWN Temple and Jerusalem.

Yes. I believe they are.

As far as I know, no one.

That Mother of Whores. Do you know her?

Quote:

Not really. It is only false and perverted 'spirituality' that robs humanity blind.
We have been warned against it from the beginning; There is none so blind as he who will not see.

Quote:
The Spiritual wants BLIND followers.
That Great Whore who sits over many waters, and her whoring daughters want blind and stupid followers.
All who are truly spiritual want you to see through all of their deceptions.

All morality tales to be recited to children, and to establish a memorable and well known example for future generations.

The Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, but the tale of Jesus and Apostles is an elaborate fiction. A fabricated mnemonic container for the concealing of 'key' information.
Your readings and understanding of the purpose of this material as yet remains superficial and shallow.

Th best explanation I have heard is that the gospels were written as promtional literature in the eerly church. Litereature and talking points to be used with converts.

Well, do you not realize that my reading and understanding is that the tale of Jesus and the Apostles is Fiction???

Please, why is your reading and understanding NOT superficial and shallow when you claim that the tale of the Jesus and the Apostles is an elaborate fiction???

Are you immune from being shallow and superficial???

Again, you don't make much sense.

Now, I deal with WRITTEN statements from antiquity--Not Shallow Superficial assertions based on imagination and Presumptions.

I have KNOWLEDGE of the material.

My position is SOLID as a ROCK and cannot be contradicted.

Apologetic sources did claim that the Temple Fell and Jerusalem was made desolate BECAUSE the Jews KILLED Jesus Christ, the Son of the Benefactor.

In the short-ending Mark, it is claimed Jesus TAUGHT his disciples that he would be DELIVERED to the Chief Priests and Gentiles to be KILLED.

Sinaiticus gMark
Quote:
33 Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be delivered to the chief of priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles,

The Jesus story was written to show that the Jews DELIVERED the Son of God to be killed and that prophecy was fulfilled when the Temple fell and Jerusalem made desolate.

Examine writings attributed to Hippolytus.

Examine writings attributed to Tertullian.

An Answer to the Jews 8
Quote:
....Accordingly the times must be inquired into of the predicted and future nativity of the Christ, and of His passion, and of the extermination of the city of Jerusalem, that is, its devastation. For Daniel says, that “both the holy city and the holy place are exterminated together with the coming Leader, and that the pinnacle is destroyed unto ruin.”...
Examine writings attributed to Justin Martyr.

Dialogue with Trypho
Quote:
.......... and that you alone may suffer that which you now justly suffer; and that your land may be desolate, and your cities burned with fire.................. Accordingly, these things have happened to you in fairness and justice, for you have slain the Just One...
