Eldarion, have you ever read the Popul Vuh? I read it when I was in college.

I don't know how much of the Aztec/Maya/Toltec etc. material was actually destroyed by the Spaniards though. If you can give me a good link about the history behind what you are talking about I would be grateful. :wave:

I have read the Popol Vuh. It is a Kiche book and the Kiches were not conquered until after De Landa's time. My source of De Landa and the Mayas is de Landa's own Relaciones de las cosas de Yucatan. In later years he became remorseful and tried to develop ways of translating Maya. He is the source of the de Landa Alphabet for Maya. He thought Maya was alphabetic and called in some literate Maya, explained what he wanted and asked "Que es a?" The Maya, thinking he meant the sign for aac, turtle, drew a turtle's head. He did take down a correct explanation for the Mayan numerals.

Zumarraga burned a few books, but more painted scrolls were hidden. He did introduce printing into the New World, and had many works (mostly religious) translated into Nahuatl. When the Nahuas discovered that alphabetic writing was much easier than their own pictorial writing, they dropped the native style for the easier European. For Zumarraga, see any good history of Mexico.

In 1533 the Audiencia of Mexico ordered native historical and archival works to be preserved, and forbade their burning.
