Doesn't this whole conversation seem a contrived fabrication?

Yes it does but the son was the Messiah who was later called Christ. He was born of a virgin who's name was Mary and she was to call him Jesus.

My dear Friend,
Luke 1:31 does say ""in your womb"
I cut and pasted from the New American Standard.
This is from the KJV
31And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

What Bible are you using?

I use the Catholic NAB which and makes room for a metaphysical birth without the words "in your womb" for the simple reason that Mary was the womb of Joseph unto whom Christ was born and therefore was a new creation to be called Jesus . . . or Jesuit/Nazarite by nature.

No they are not stupid. The census is an account of ones self (much like a confession), except that here it is a final confession and therefore the whole world must be confessed . . . which would be the entire world of Joseph who therefore, as if pregnant with dispair, returned to the same state of mind he was at birth and there gave an account of himself when the Christ-child was born unto him.

Your welcome. We have an icon on the journey to Bethlehem wherein Mary was enthroned on top of the donkey to show that she was in charge of this final account while Joseph was as much as dragging his ass behind the donkey. It is really nice but gets better if you compare this with the triumphant entry into the new Jerusalem where just the opposite mood is shown.

I'm not even going to pretend to understand this. Where do you get this Dali-esque symbolism from?

Actually, I think he dragged his colt behind his ass going into Jerusalem. Or maybe he got his ass on the colt and rode them both into Jerusalem.
