Default Luke 4:16

Quote:
Isaiah
  • 58:6 No, this is the kind of fast I want. I want you to remove the sinful chains, to tear away the ropes of the burdensome yoke, to set free the oppressed, and to break every burdensome yoke.
  • -----
  • 61:1 The spirit of the sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has chosen1 me. He has commissioned me to encourage the poor, to help the brokenhearted, to decree the release of captives, and the freeing of prisoners,
  • 61:2 to announce the year when the Lord will show his favor, the day when our God will seek vengeance,to console all who mourn,
Luke:
  • 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
  • 4:17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
  • 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,
  • 4:19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
Luke 4:16-17 purports to be Isaiah text read by Jesus in the synagogue. How do scholars reconcile the fact that the quote merges a phrase from Isaiah 58 into Isaiah 61? Furthermore, is it not true that the reference to the blind stamps the source as Greek and, if so, why would Luke have Jesus reading from a Greek scroll in a Nazareth synagogue?

4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to

the captives (brokenhearted) and the regaining of sight to the blind,
to set free those who are oppressed (prisoners),

Hey, we know the blind can see just as we know the poor are wealthy.
Is a qualification for being blind is to be a captive?

Simply a Greek (Essene) translation of the Hebrew. And, of course,
Jesus is not in Galilee, Syria. He is in Galilee, Palestine.

I bet ol' Amos would have a blast with this one!
