Default The Roman Cult of Mithras

Recently I've been surveying that available literature on the Roman Cult of Mithras. I had planned an ambitious project to provide a comprehensive resource for the layman on the subject, but time simply won't allow it and I suspect such may not be necessary. Therfore what I'd like to do is provide an FAQ addressing the volumes of misinformation on the internet regarding this obscure cult and it's relationship (or lack thereof) to Xianity. I'm hoping that all you good BC&H folks could help me in developing a set of common questions and or incorrect assertions regarding the Roman Cult of Mithras. What questions would you like to see addressed. I already have a lengthy list of false claims made about Mithras and Jesus, but I'd like to see what the average BC&H participant thinks.

Thanks,

CX

I would like to see more on the relationship between Rome and the 'eastern cults' and the attitude towards them. Octavian etc. trying to stamp them out and then the later attitudes toward these cults. I dare say you have that covered CX. But all the best with your project anyway I'd be very interested to read it and thanks for the link to your post Ted Hoffman.

Yes, I have one. I have promised to write an essay on Mithraism for Ebla (see here). Maybe we could collaborate a little.

best,

That could be very productive. PM me with details. My intention is to base the FAQ heavily on the work of Manfred Klauss and private discussions I've had with his translator Dr. Gordon.

I'll have to look at it in more detail but a cursory glance suggest more of the same garbage one finds all over the internet. That the author refers only to Cumont (whose work is 100 years old and widely disputed by modern mithraic scholars) and Ulansey (whose work is of modern vintage but largely disregarded by most modern mithraic scholars or worse described as crackpottery) suggests that the site is not well researched.
