Default A short modern interpretation of some under-examined facets of the mythos of Osiris

As we all know, Osiris was killed by his brother Seth and sent to rather a lot of parts of the country all at the same time. This was achieved by chopping him into bits.

His loyal goddess-wife Isis tracked down all of the bits bar one, his willy, which had been eaten by a crocodile. She reassembled him. For his missing member, with incredible lack of foresight, she substituted a piece of wood.

Osiris was promptly up and about, and, for the first time, realised that even a god needs an heir. This he set about producing with Isis.

Isis said "ouch". Let us hope that she didn't get splinters.

Amazingly, Isis then became pregnant by him; at least, she claimed that he was the father. Other deities tended to say things like, "That Anubis; he's a bit of a dog, right?" Anyway, along comes baby Horus, although for some reason he has the head of a hawk.

No doubt Osiris was philosophical about the matter. But he ended up spending all his time in the underworld, where he couldn't hear the other gods sniggering. At least in the underworld none of the mortals around were likely to make unhelpful remarks about how much like Anubis his son looked.

I look forward to your modern interpretation of the mythos of Jesus although I don't expect it any time soon.

The way mythicists work is to ignore the details (which are usually vital for the meaning of a particular myth) and to generalize the narrative to the point that it encompasses almost any narrative, but particularly the gospel narrative.

Generalized enough, the Osirus myth can be claimed as the origin of Darwinism and Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. It explains everything, and hence nothing.

There is no serious purpose to my remarks; merely the image in my mind of a man with a wooden willy trying to get his wife pregnant.

Riiight. The basics of the Jesus story (and they differ just like Osiris) is that Jesus, a Divine, died a human death, and was brought back to life by a god but left the human world. Now let's see, where is the better parallel, Osiris or the Jewish Bible?

Joseph

Jesus. Name. The fleshy part of the trinity.

Is part of the problem with seeing the Jesus myth the habit of cutting the gospels into bits and then not putting it back together? All the supernatural bits - water into wine, virgin birth, meeting Elijah, Holy Spirit as a dove etc are chopped off, are thrown out to leave this wooden historical jesus that never quite works or makes sense.

Try taking these stories as written and how they are interpreted - for example in the holy ghost thread on this page.

I find it no more "silly" then the christian myths. In fact I tend to have a bit more respect for the ancient gods.

Possibly Osiris used the services of an Egyptian Holy Ghost to impregnate Isis ?

Your basics are not my basics, sir.
