Default The Christ Conspiracy: The Greatest Story Ever Sold

Has anyone here read this book? A friend recommended it to me and it sounds fascinating. A lot of it seems to expand on Kersey Graves and his book "The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors."

The Christ Conspiracy: The Greatest Story Ever Sold

Book Description
Controversial and explosive, The Christ Conspiracy marshals an enormous amount of startling evidence that the religion of Christianity and Jesus Christ were created by members of various secret societies, mystery schools and religions in order to unify the Roman Empire under one state religion! This powerful book maintains that these groups drew upon a multitude of myths and rituals that already existed long before the Christian era and reworked them into the story the Christian religion presents today-known to most Westerners as the Bible. Author Acharya makes the case that there was no actual person named Jesus, but that several characters were rolled into one mythic being inspired by the deities Mithras, Heracles/Hercules, Dionysus and many others of the Roman Empire. She demonstrates that the story of Jesus, as portrayed in the Gospels, is nearly identical in detail to those of the earlier savior-gods Krishna and Horus, and concludes that Jesus was certainly neither original nor unique, nor was he the divine revelation. Rather, he represents the very ancient body of knowledge derived from celestial observation and natural forces. A book that will initiate heated debate and inner struggle, it is intelligently written and referenced. The only book of its kind, it is destined for controversy.

overall good book. very informative and thought provoking. I loved it. lots of ammo for my discussions with christians. It gives good evidence that the whole story of christ is simply a retelling of previous ancient fables, a rehash based on astrology. very convincing. However, the author's seeming hatred of christianity is apparent in the tone of the book. Written in anger almost, but hey, I'm pissed about the whole fallacy too, as well as the reign of death and destruction wrought by christianity and the catholic church.

Graves wrote over a hundred years ago, basing much of what he says on conjecture and lack of evidence. We've come a long way from when he wrote, though many of the people, including many here, suffering from the lingering adverse effects of xianity and feelings of disillusionment, like to contemplate works like that of Graves as a quick antidote.

There are no conspiracies of the type that interest you with the subject line. There are just long periods of theological speculation and development of people either dealing with the world or dealing with the conflicts that their positions force on them, and side currents of power struggles due to disagreements on how to handle conflicts.

Yeah, even presidents have to pretend to be devout religionists:

It's grand to be a democrat and toady to the mob,
For fear that if you told the truth they'd hunt you from the job.

There are a lot of newer ideas floating around on the analysis of xianity and many opf them crop up here from time to time.

Please read this note by Richard Carrier about Kersey Graves 16 Crucified Saviors:

Graves does get some things right, but he is "unreliable" as a source - there is a mixture of truth and speculation and error.

Quote:
Graves often does not distinguish his opinions and theories from what his sources and evidence actually state.

Graves often omits important sources and evidence.

Graves often mistreats in a biased or anachronistic way the sources he does use.

Graves occasionally relies on suspect sources.

Graves does little or no source analysis or formal textual criticism.

Graves' work is totally uninformed by modern social history (a field that did not begin to be formally pursued until after World War II, i.e., after Graves died).

Graves' conclusions and theories often far exceed what the evidence justifies, and he treats both speculations and sound theories as of equal value.

Graves often ignores important questions of chronology and the actual order of plausible historical influence, and completely disregards the methodological problems this creates.

Graves' work lacks all humility, which is unconscionable given the great uncertainties that surround the sketchy material he had to work with.

Graves' scholarship is obsolete, having been vastly improved upon by new methods, materials, discoveries, and textual criticism in the century since he worked. In fact, almost every historical work written before 1950 is regarded as outdated and untrustworthy by historians today.
Acharya S is probably in the same boat as Graves, but she has less excuse, since she is working today and has access to modern ideas and methods. She accepts Graves and has written a preface to a new edition of his work. Like Graves, she gets some things right - probably a lot. But you cannot rely on her as a source - she gets some things wrong.

And if you try to use Acharya S or Graves in a debate on the internet, you will lose all credibility, and your opponents will laugh at your gullibility.

But if you enjoy the book, have fun with it.

My own reading indicates that Jesus was created more from Jewish sources. There are many parallels between the pagans and the Jesus story, but at least some of them came in through Hellenistic Judaism, or were added after Constantine made Christianity one of three official Roman religions.

Fascinating book! Has anyone else looked into the book? It seems to be accepted here. And it looks like it has already been critically reviewed:

Quote:
In regards to certain claims that cause foaming at the mouth, I have checked numerous of Acharya's facts, which she footnotes continuously, and they check out, including whether or not the founders of Communism were "Jewish." Checks out-most of them were. Just consult the Jewish Encyclopedia! Regarding Hitler, read his own writings! Screeching and throwing fits isn't going to change the facts. Also Acharya's writing regarding the ancient civilization is some of the best out there. These ruins and legends exist, how else do we explain them? And why do they sound so much like Christianity, which is the focus of this book? The chapter is relevant and interesting. Period.

Like others have said regarding this book, don't blindly believe what the disturbed critics have to say. There are a dozen or more pages online that you can read for yourself. If you are honest and balanced, you will have to say that Acharya's scholarship is impressive and that she backs up practically every point.
Perhaps that link should be put in the Recommended Reading list?

Default She has a new book coming out in June

It should be interesting. There are a number of chapters online. She also claims to vindicate Kersey Graves.

Picking up where The Christ Conspiracy left off, in Suns of God Acharya S explores in greater depth the most pervasive religious concept on the globe for thousands of years: Astrotheology, or the worship of the sun, moon, stars and planets. Suns of God demonstrates that sun worship, in particular, dating back to several millennia and higly developed in cultures worldwide, is behind many of the world's current religions. In fact, major gods of the ancient world, such as Osiris, Horus, Dionysus, Hercules, Apollo, Mithra and even Krishna, Buddha and Christ, are included in the solar pantheon. Sun worship was vital for agricultural communities, as it was the vessel by which important information concerning the natural order was passed along from generation to generation. The sun was revered as the Supreme Being, the God of gods, the King of kings, the Savior, the Redeemer, the Mediator. The reverence for the sun, moon, stars and planets led to entire cultures being created around them, with elaborate myths, rituals, mysteries, brotherhoods, buildings and cities based on astrotheology and nature-worship.

This exciting inheritance of wisdom and vibrance has been bestowed to us today nearly intact, yet sublimated and suppressed by a less lofty but crumbling facade.

1. Introduction
2. Astrotheology of the Ancients
3. The God Sun
4. The Solar Pantheon
5. Life of Krishna
6. Krishna, Light of the World
7. Krishna, Born of a Virgin?
8. Krishna's Birthdate
9. Krishna Crucified?
10. Life of Buddha
11. Buddha, Sun of God
12. The "Historical" Jesus
13. Jesus Christ, Sun of God
14. Mithra, Light of the World
15. The Myterious Brotherhood
16. Conclusion

Suns of God will also vindicate the much-maligned Kersey Graves, who is accused by the less erudite of "fabrication" and "lies." Suns of God traces a number of Graves's assertions to older sources, such that he may be exonerated of such charges. In this regard, Acharya has written a new "Foreword" to the latest version of Graves's The World's 16 Crucified Saviors published by Adventures Unlimited Press.

I've read about half of it(hold on), 190 pages. There are TOO many connections. It seems like she is throwing out EVERY single link she could find, no matter how speculative or tenuous. She gives a qoute from a play as a legitimate qoute. Makes one raise an eyebrow. It is entertaining. That's why I bought it. For entertainment only. But like I've said in the past, I've only read half of it.

I'd like to see it. "The less erudite" certainly have given Graves's book a bit of a go-over. Perhaps the Infidels could post a review of her book?
