Default Iron Age Hebron?

What archaeological findings are there from Iron Age Hebron? Was it settled? What was the population size? Jerusalem rose to any semblence of greatness only at the end of the 8th century BCE. Yet there is the Biblical story about David ruling from Hebron for some 7 years before his alleged conquest of Jerusalem. I am wondering if this story could have arisen from a situation where Hebron was Judah's capital for several generations, prior to a move to Jerusalem sometime in the 8th century.
