gstafleu: Ah, I see what you're getting at. "When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs." And then he zapped it. So you think Jesus said "It's out of season and you're still not growing fruit eh?" Zap! That is not very logical, as you I think have also noted.
No it isn't very logical, yet that's what he supposedly did. Which, to me, would demonstrate that he's a false prophet.

Quote:
MORE: My interpretation is: Jesus came upon a fig tree without fruit and said "You're season is over and you'll never bear fruit again, so who needs you." Zap!
Except that, it would bear fruit again; in season. There is no "you'll never bear fruit again, so who needs you" logic to it, which means Jesus did a completely illogical thing for no coherent reason.

MORE: This makes more sense when we translate the allegory: Jesus came upon a false prophet and said "You're time has gone, you're never going to do anything useful, so who needs you." Zap!
How does it make sense that Jesus cursed a fig tree for being a fig tree? It's "time" was not "gone;" had Jesus not cursed it, presumably it would have borne fruit next season.

So, you cannot "translate" it or "interpret" it in the manner you wish, because it does not fit your version. In fact, it contradicts it. The fig tree's time had not "gone" and it would do something useful next season and the locals desperately need it for sustenance.

Let me put into more drastic terms to illustrate my point; it would be like cursing a black guy for not being white, or cursing a man for not having a vagina. What metaphor/information would you glean from that illogical action; if your "savior" cursed a black guy for not being white, or cursed you for not having a vagina? What would that tell you about the person you're thinking is your savior?

In antiquity, "figs" often referred to initiation into ancient mysteries. The statement "under the tree" having a similar meaning; such as in the story of Buddha gaining enlightenment "under the bodhi tree". So, this story could symbolize the elimination of the old method of enlightenment---never to produce fruit---Christ is bringing in a new method of initiation. Just a guess.
Just read godhatesfigs.com and would state that figs is a metaphor as stated in above paragraph somewhat explaining the issues raised by this site.

Obviously the tree was inhabited by Satan. Anything else would have given Jesus fruit. Hence the zap. QED.

In Jeremiah 7:11 some wording is similar to the words used by Jesus...

Look at Jeremiah 7:20...All about ANGER poured even on the trees!
The money lenders story is the only one showing Jesus in a display of major anger...

Then in Jeremiah 8:13 it says "there will be no figs on the trees and their leaves will wither"...Is it a coincidence that this is exactly what is said to have happened?

Jesus is either looking for signs that would confirm him being the Messiah, or else he decided to create himself all the signs that biblical prophecy had related to the arrival of a Messiah...
