Default books on new testament canon formation?

i was reading carrier's essay on the secular web a few months ago, and it got me intrigued (ok, so i've been busy lately ). so i was wondering if anyone had any book recomendations on the formation, particularly concerning the early church father's views on which books were considered canonical and which were "suspect," or just a good overview of the process in general.

thanks in advance

Here are three.

The Canon of the New Testament: Its Origin, Development, and Significance
by Bruce M. Metzger

The most recognized work, with plenty of detail.

The Formation of Christian Biblical Canon
by Lee M. McDonald

An excellent and even-handed introduction to the subject.

The Canon Debate
by Lee Martin McDonald and James A. Sanders

A collection of essays from thirty-one scholars that covers both OT and NT canons.

best,

There was a nice article by D Moody Smith in the JBL entitled When Did the Gospels Become Scripture?, that I always intend to find a link for when this subject is raised, and always forget about immediately after.

The Formation of the New Testament Canon, by Richard Carrier, summarizes the work of Metzger.
