Default Prophecy...

I often hear peoples main argument for their belief in the bible is the prophecies. Do these have any credibility? Or are they most likely filled in after the events themselves happened?

If you want more try to search Google with "failed biblical prophecies" and you'll get a nice list that will keep you occupied for some time.

Actually, I have rarely if ever heard that prophesy is the main reason people believe, in fact I think it is the reverse. People believe, because they were raised in a particular religion, and use prophesy as a later confirmation argument for that belief.

But it is easy enough to retrofit prophesy from pretty much any statement you wish to. See Nosti, Drosnin, the Bible, Cayce, Moby Dick, whatever you wish.

I guarantee that I could produce 50 prophesies on IIDB tomorrow, that will come true within the next twelve months. It is that easy.

Collingwho?? Prediction:

"They will meet in a giant arena. And the greater will overcome the lesser.
The bird may overcome the animal or beast but the lesser may be greater.
There will be much rejoicing, and much pain.
And it will pass, with the Cat in triumph, no matter how many centuries it takes."

Good enough? Nosto did well with less.

IMO,

Most of the bible's "prophecies" (whether they were legitimate or not is another debate that i don't want to get into) were fulfilled shortly after they were "predicted" (or perhaps they were written down after the events already happened). In fact, I believe most "messianic" prophecies are simply taken out of context and have already been fulfilled, and have nothing to do with a "messiah"

Yes the fulfilled prophesies are a strong pointer to the worthiness of the Bible. But the best advocate for biblical belief is usually overlooked. That is for someone to strive to live a biblically based life - trusting in God and grasping the promises made by God in the Bible. That is when the worthiness really becomes personally meaningful.

The specific prophecies about (the) messiah were not even claimed to be fulfilled by the NT. That is why the Jews didn't convert en masse. Claimed prophecies in the NT are oftentimes the result of force-fitting a non-messianic passage and poor knowledge of Hebrew.
