Default My biggest wtf moment in the Bible. Yours?

Feel free to share yours...

People genuinely endeavor to get closer to God for the purpose of getting closer to God because he's God, the only thing worth getting closer to in the whole universe. The result:
From the horses mouth...
""And the Lord said, "The man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.""

"After he drove man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life."

Either God is terribly afraid of being outcast if he engages in peer relationships or it is a really terrible thing to be like God, which begs the question on both points, "Why would we worship this being?"

So people still want to get closer to God for the purpose of getting closer to God... they build a tower in earnest (symbollic of doing something to get closer to God)...

""In seeing this God declares, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.""

Wow! People can actually achieve perfect goodness! Let's see what God does...

"Come let's go down and confuse their language so that they will not understand each other."

WTF!!! once for the God of the Bible
WTF!!! twice for those who see no problem whatsoever with these passages

There are so many to choose from.

How about God getting pissed off at Moses for sparing the women and children of their enemy and telling his righteous prophet to get on back there and slaughter all those women and boys, but to let the virgin girls live so that the Israelites can keep them for themselves (and I seriously doubt it was to marry them and make "honest women" of them)?

A WTF? moment for me is, denying Moses entry into the Promised Land because he became a little impatient with God when everyone in the desert was dying of thirst.

Psalm 137 did it for me. The kicker was when I realized that the "bashing babies heads on rocks" bit comes right after the bit that is in so many songs that I like. It's a reggae song, it's a different song by Don McLean, and I think there are quite a few other versions of "By the Rivers of Babylon".

And right after "How can we sing King Alfa's song in a strange land?" there's that horrid verse about bashing babies on rocks. Fuck.

There's no question if Hollywood or whomever was to make a literal movie of the bible, they'd be hard-pressed to get a single x. Let's see, nudity, forced organ transplant, sex, murder, genocide, infanticide, incest, drunkeness, masturbation, wife swapping, slavery, rape, 'cleansing', theft, blasphemy, war, law-breaking, wrassling, idol worship, adultery, executions, jealousy, torture, treason, infidelity, lying, sedition, sadism, unfaithfulness (in every way). Am I leaving any thing out? One thing you have to give it, it is representative of human nature for better or worse.

Two leap to mind for me. The one where Jesus says you have to hate your father and mother and sister and brother and own life or you can't be his disciple and the other (in Mark) where Jesus' alleged tomb is not empty; it is instead open and there is a "young man" (not an angel) sitting inside.

And no one questions him as to who the fuck he is and what the fuck he did with Jesus' body.

Oh, and all of Revelations, of course; though I've developed an interesting theory (and I believe others have as well) that Revelations was actually all coded for the true believers under the oppression of the Roman usurpers of their insurgent "worship" of their martyred "freedom fighter" leader and was more of a "here's where we're meeting tonight" spy book than anything necessarily religious.

It's in progress, though, so don't call me on any specifics yet. Just a "revelation" I had, you might say.

Incest, all through the bible. Who did the first boys marry? Why is it ok to marry your half sister? Why is Lot praised for righteousness when he knocked up both his daughters?
WTF??

It jest ain't right.

I agree. Could you imagine the outcry if someone were to film the Book of Joshua just as it is written (nonstop gruesome genocide perpetrated by God's chosen people at his command)? That person would be accused of "bashing" religion.
