Default Perish the thought

I'm having a discussion with Kosh3 in GRD about John 3:16.

The word "perish" is used in such a way that it appears to me to be the opposite of everlasting life ie death. Kosh3 is of the opinion that it means you would have everlasting life whether you believe in JC or not, but you would have it in flames without being consumed.

Can anyone tell me what the actual word is and how it is used elsewhere? Does it generally mean death or does it have other meanings?
