Default Gambling: From a biblical perspective.. Please?

A request for insight:

Recently I was watching TV and The Price is Right came on.. People pay to get into the show right? With the chance that they will get to play a game for cash and prizes..

My question is;

1. Is this gambling?

2. Is this considered evil in a biblical sense?

I look forward to your responses...

The Bible does not condemn gambling. It also does not condemn alcohol in moderation, smoking, or dancing, which also get certain fundamentalists upset. It is totally unclear what Biblical writers would have thought about game shows on TV, or TV in general.

The Christians who claim that the Bible condemns gambling have to redefine gambling as "greed" or "stealing" or some other real sin.

If your question is whether game shows are evil in a general sense, you might try this question in the MFP forum.

But I don't think that the contestants pay to get on the show. I think they are selected for what they will add to the entertainment value of the show, but I'm not going to research it.

Condemnation of gambling comes from mostly Calvin-inspired sects because of their belief in what looks to me a God who hates us and wants life to be as difficult as possible so we work as hard as possible for as little return as possible. Something for nothing is a big no-no. You want to see what the traditional churches think of gambling, count the number of Catholic priests at any major horse race!

People don't pay to participate at TPIR... You have to get there very early the day they film and they select people who will be fun for the show. It is free.
