Docetism was not necessarily reacting to anything; or, if it was, it may not be a "Christian assertion" it was reacting to.

It was an early form of Christianity per se - a pre-flesh one.
Do you see this as an intermediate phase between a Doherty style story and orthodox xtianity?

Doeticism may not have had a clear objective, either.

Likely to have been just a variation of a version of a salvation story for the increasingly dispersed and down-trodden Jewish Diaspora.
Which salvation story could it have been a version of?

A teaspoon of an expectorant will likely clear that up.

I maintain my right to critically question whether there was any earlier development. How well do you trust the governments of the 21st century? And if you don't trust the governments of the 21st century by what miracle should anyone trust the governments of the 4th century?

Jesus and Mo are the figureheads of government propaganda.

Sure. And, if there was any earlier development, it seems best to consider the extent of it - it may not be much; or the seeds of the development may have been sown before the 1st century.
