To be rich, you go the Bart Ehrman route. Hook up with HarperCollins and publish books that are controversial to the public but firmly within the academic mainstream.

I think Bart Ehrman is the only such author with respect to New Testament history.

Take the cover off the sacred book of your choice In the Abrahamic tradition, and hand it to a person unfamiliar with the stories and their influence on Western Civilization, and the only rational comment by the "objective" observer would be, "You must be joking."
