Default Filling out religious criteria on PSAT?

I took the PSAT this morning. When we were filling out our names and such, it also asked for our religious affiliations. I understand that this was for statistical purposes, but it really got to me. It would be like, "Oh, Lutherans did poorly on verbal," or something like that. In my opinion, at least.

I checked the code that said, "I do not wish to answer." It was kind of odd that they didn't have a code for "Deist" or "Agnostic," but they had groups on there that I've never heard of. I guess that's because not too many people would have identified themselves as such.

Do you think it was right to have that question on there, even for statistical purposes?

I think it is there so that universities/colleges who have religious affiliations can see which people belong to that denom and how well they do--just to help those schools/individuals get together better. I don't think it is for statistical purposes at all.

Must be PSAT season - we had another thread like this a year ago - Why does Virginia not recognize Atheism?

and had to think quickly to explain it to my parents when the scores came back
If your parents can see which religion you marked then it isn't totally accurate. I, for one, would mark Methodist in that case unless I had already told my parents that I'm atheist. A test score isn't the way I'd want to break it to them. If I do mark no religion or atheist or whatever they had then Murphy's Law would make me bomb it. :banghead: :banghead:

Btw, I'll probably have to take the PSAT next year.

IIRC (and correct me if I'm mistaken), the SAT/PSAT are given by a private company, who then sells the results to colleges who want to buy them. So they're going to ask questions that the colleges want to know. If no college/uni/institute wants to know whether you're an atheist or agnosic or deist, then they won't ask. "I don't wish to answer" sounds like it takes care of the people who don't fall into the categories that various colleges want the PSAT/SAT to tell them.

Also, if it's a private company who runs the tests (or if it's run on non-government funds), it's really not a church/state seperation issue.

Hey,

Next year, I'm not contributing to the thread! I can't believe that I've been here over a year.

Back to topic.
