Einstein was more a deist. He had no belief in a personal god.

Vesica,

Welcome!

Shadowy Man,
A confusion of terms on my part I suspect. I am aware of Einstein's religious views. I just thought theism meant belief in God whether the God is considerered personal or impersonal. Deism is belief in God minus belief in Christ or Christianity.

Graeme -

I went and looked up definitions for 'intellectualism' just to make sure that was the word I wanted...It was! I was using definition 3.

Quote:
intellectualism n :
1. Intellectual power; intellectuality.
2. The doctrine that knowledge is derived from pure reason.
3. The favoring of the intellect over other powers, sometimes gratuitously or arrogantly.
I think definition 3 is at the root of all my questions I posted here....In case you had not figured it out yet I am of the Christian persuasion...I seem to practice my own little version but I think it comes closest to the doctrine of some of the more charastmatic denomonations....

Anyway, as a reasonably intelligent, capable, and rational person who did question the faith she was raised with, I think I am still stinging from the overwhelmingly anti-Christian sentiment of the school I went to...Granted they (select groups of "intellectuals") were also mad at all white males everywhere for being and viewed most heterosexuals with great suspicion....

I thank you all for helping and continuing, through all the posts on this forum, to help me get over being attacked by people rabidly devoted to logic over all other things in life (Like friends or emotion or entertainment etc. etc.).

*sigh* I feel a little freer than I did

We've discussed Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Sikh, pagan:earth, and atheist/humanist beliefs in our meetings.
We're not certain that any one belief, be it theism or atheism has it all right, but we are certain none of them have the right to say they're the only correct one, and everyone else has to believe it too, or they're damned. The one thing our summer speaker emphasizes is; if there is an afterlife, eternal damnation is definitely NOT part of it. In fact, last Sunday, he said preaching hell to young children is spiritual child abuse.
We encourage the children in our group to think for themselves and develop their own ideas and beliefs about the world.
Alot of the folks at my UU gathering are more humanist than anything, and I like that too, as I consider myself more humanist than anything, if I had to nail down a belief.
The only beliefs I have not heard anyone talk about at a UU meeting are: Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Scientology.

This sounds unlikely. Perhaps you should get to know them a little better, it sounds like you got the wrong idea.

I know it sounds unlikely but those ideas about thier ideas were drawn from direct quotes. I never said these people were logical!
