If it's any consolation, you'll always be a skanky slut to me, babe.

Hi LadyShea,

Quote:
coas...thank you for being so open about your career. People stick with their preconceived notions no matter what in many cases. When I was a stripper, people told me all kinds of things I must be or think or do...when I asked them "How many strippers have you met or talked to" they always replied "Well, you're the first". Yeah, but somehow they know the intricate details.
Ain't that the truth! It seems impossible for some people to wrap their minds around the fact that you can be intelligent, well-read/educated/traveled, responsible etc... - and make a rational choice to do a certain type of work, just because not everybody fits that description. They have to lump everybody into one neat little category that complements their black-and-white vision of the world and certainly doesn't interfere with them being holier-than-thou.

Sure, there are plenty of girls in the dancing/adult modeling/porn industry who are dumber than a box of rocks. So what? They are everywhere else too (guys too, there is equal opportunity idiocy all over the place I'm beginning to realize in life).

I also notice many people define others by their profession. Often if their is any sort of newsworthy occurance the headline will read "Stripper/former stripper/former prostitute" whatever instead of "mother/student/cashier". I danced for two years out of my life, but will probabluy always be known as the "former stripper" to some people.
Argh, that one always pisses me off. In the newspaper: "Former stripper runs for city council" or something like that.... who gives 2 shits? Are they describing her opponent as "Former Pool-Cleaner/Truck Driver/Line Cook runs for...."? I think not.

K, I'm done ranting (for the moment... ) Still curious to hear Odemus' response to my other questions...

How about a compromise like Hungarian-born ex-porn star and former Italian lawmaker?

Wow, that is fascinating actually!

Woefully, I have almost no doubt that someone with her background would *never* be elected here in the good-ole-USA .

Which is a shame, because we could use some lawmakers who were actually willing to

One of the joys of my late teenagerhood in Italy was seeing nightly news clips of Ilona Staller sitting topless in Parliament. "The Chair asks Deputy Staller to please put on a shirt." She would inevitably acceed to the demand, but only after having taken advantage of her bully pulptit to make a statement on some issue.

When you say that someone with her background could never be elected to office in the US, you don't know how right you are. First of all, she wasn't born in Italy and was a naturalized citizen. Secondly, she was incredibly famous as a porn star, on the cover of hundreds of magazines (and in Italy this meant plain view on newstands) and most reknown for the film in which she fucked a horse.

She is almost solely responsible for giving the Radical Party any name recognition whatsoever. The best move they ever made was putting her on the ticket.

As far as the term "talent" goes, I'm boldly guessing not just anyone could properly deal, with what may (or may not) take place in the porn industry.

C.O.A.S. what are your experiences with drug abuse in the industry, or mental problems of people who couldn't quite cope with being in porn?

Just a fly-by post before I race out the door to finalise my enrolment at College:

Re: people defining who you are by what you do, or have done, and how that means jack as to what you can accomplish. Here is the story of a NZ MP and city mayor - I doubt she would ever get elected for anything in the U.S.A., either - but she rocks!!

Is this a Freudian typo or a clever jab? I'll let livius drusus make the call...

And, now I have PWEI's "Touched By The Hand Of Cicciolina" going through my head. I guess I'll have to load it to the MP3 player.

Hi Infinity Lover!

You asked,
Quote:

As far as drug use is concerned, it is certainly an issue in the industry and a problem for many of the people in it. There is no shortage of anecdotes of actors coming to the set high/stoned/drunk or getting that way *between* scenes, and on on some sets it is even encouraged (basically a "party" atmosphere). HOWEVER, at the present (as opposed to even 10 years ago when I was first exposed to the industry) it is much less "acceptable". The "talent" who let these problems interfere with working/being on time/performing well are generally fairly quickly blacklisted by better-paying studios and will still find work but it will probably not be in a good environment (they will swirl to the bottom of the barrel so to speak.)

However, I am encouraged by recent strides made by some in the adult "community" (specifically, Sharon Mitchell of Adult Industry Medical) to provide and/or direct people to services for assistance with issues such as drug and alcohol dependence.

One thing that I think is ironic is the amount of tolerance/sympathy/empathy that people have for "regular" entertainers (t.v. and movie actors, musicians, etc.) who struggle with drug abuse as opposed to people that they see as "strung-out crack ho's" - their level of compassion seems to immediately go through the basement in direct correlation to the person's profession.

As far as people's mental problems, that's a bit touchier of a subject; while I am not an expert, I am a pretty perceptive person and

-wait gotta go more in a bit!!! just realized late for meeting
