Maybe Daria wanted to live somewhere affordable.

Norfolk was your first choice? Not Pearl or San Diego, or somewhere overseas?

Amen (can I say that on an atheist forum?) to that! I didn't get to go to either of them until I got in the Reserves. Will pick them over Norfolk traffic any time but the cost of living in both is much higher from what I can tell. Not to discourage you, daria, it really is what you make of it, and I still go to Norfolk once a month for Reserve drill, not a bad area.

Yes, a frigate in Norfolk was my first choice... I actually would have preferred a minesweeper, but there wasn't one open to females on my billet list. As it stands, I'll be one of the first females on my frigate. The last I heard, they still don't have the female berthing set up yet.

I did well enough in my class that I probably would have gotten nearly anything I went for. I would like to go to the west coast, but I know I can do it later in my career--if I do make this a career, that is. My family is on the east coast, and my maternal grandfather, who has dementia and has been under my mother's care since I was in high school, will not be with us much longer. I know I might be out to sea when it happens, but I'd like to give myself the chance to be near my family when he passes.

On a lighter note, I'l looking forward to the weather change. One of my closest friends was stationed at Little Creek for a while, and he loved the area. We've known each other since 6th grade, so if he was able to enjoy the place, I'm sure I'll be able to. I'm excited about it. Hell, even if they were sending me to the worst place ever, I'd be glad just to get out of training and into the real Navy!
Alot of things in life are what you make of it, and I intend to make the most of Norfolk, as well as any subsequent duty station I get.

Daria,

Yes, you're right, Little Creek is a nice area. I used to live in an apartment across from the Amphib Base there, get out at 5:30 to beat the traffic (which sucks there) over to the Naval Base in Norfolk, grab some more sleep in my stateroom and then get up for quarters.

I wish you the best of luck in the Navy, shipmate.
