Okay! Now I understand why Lynyrd Skynyrd were so pissed off about 'Southern Man' - thanks for clearing that up for me.

Depends on the circles in which one moves, I suppose. This is the first time I've encountered that opinion.

I doubt you'd find many to agree with you at, say, Cropredy, Oxfordshire, second weekend in August. Or among Mojo readers. Or among the more informed fans of Sonic Youth, Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

Yes, he's had his wanker-ish moments. Like David Bowie hasn't?Comes with the territory.

Yes, his voice is a bit odd till you get used to it. So what? Bjork, Richard Thompson, Bob Dylan, Norma Waterson, Lotte Lenya...? But if you think he's "screechy", you need a better dictionary. He's no more weird on the high notes than Daniel Bedingfield.

And yes, he's Canadian.

Cultural trash is there for comedic relief. What would life be like if we can't laugh at the crazy things we used to like? Check out http://x-entertainment.com/ and make fun of the crud from the 80's!

I'm also getting a kick out of the 80's stuff in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. One memorable bit relating to the first post here was during a radio commercial for a synthesizer: The future of music is in everyone's hand, no talent required! You don't know you're a musician until you try!

YIPPEEE

I made a long thread! At last!

FYI

We have LOTS of cultural crud here in SA. Luckily its all so cruddy that we haven't managed to export it and offend firriners.

Why do I find these lil' dudes scary? Things should have noses, I tell you. Remember those monsters on Sesame Street who were just eyeballs and a huge mouth, appearing out of nowhere going "yipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyip, uhhuh, uhhuh, uhhuh"? Scared the living shit out of me. Noses, people.
