Default Are braces worth the hassle ?

One of my British friends just came back from Stanford University and he made the observation that almost everyone at Stanford has perfect teeth. Are braces really worth the hassle ?

Suppose somewhere in the middle. Not really that bad but your looks can be improved by it.

well, thats pretty ambiguous, my questio should have been: "is this purely for cosmetic reasons?"

because if it is, then the odds are its probably not worth your time, the pain, and the cash.

Don't a lot of people do it just for cosmetic reasons.

ja, they do, but IMO its a waste of time. if theres no actual problems with your jaw, then i cant see why you wouldnt take the money and spend it on something else.

but remember, this is only my opinion, others are bound to disagree.

I wonder if there's such thing as a "snaggle-tooth" fetish.

They were worth it for me, but I had some pretty damn jacked up teeth... my mom didn't want me to get them for a long time because she thought it was just cosmetic, but it turns out that there were some other jaw issues that made them a good idea.

I was probably the happiest kid I knew about getting braces, even though I was getting them on at an age when everyone else was getting them taken off. Anyone who has known me before and after braces can probably say much better than I can how much my self-esteem has improved.

What's not worth it is when the parents pay out the ass for braces and the kid doesn't wear the retainers and after a few years, it's like they never had them. I'm kinda glad I got mine as late as I did; I appreciated them much more and I still wear my retainer at night, four years later.

I suppose it's just a case by case thing as to whether or not they're worth it. Mine were worth it.

Thumbs up

Mine were worth it. I look at pictures of me pre-braces and think OMG those were my teeth??

(I'm wearing my retainers right now )

I was embarassed to smile before I got my braces, my grandma would tell me to smile with my lips closed for pictures. I had bite and jaw issues too. I started orthodontics at age 8 with headgear at night, then only wore braces for 2 years...they were off before I was 13.

I get more compliments on my smile than any other feature and it is often the first thing I notice about others...I think it's worth it
