Yes.
In the "we give you a story about someone and you answer questions about it" section, whatever the hell it's called, remember the following: If the subject is female and/or non-white, then the correct answer will be positive. Example: At the conclusion of this passage, how would you describe Jane? A Selfish B Successful C Materialistic Sure, it won't be as obvious as the example I've given, but in every case, you will know the correct answer before even reading the passage. Rather than being good at memorizing* the english language, you are instead being tested on your ability to predict the SAT's sense of political correctness. Here's another interesting question: If the College Board is a non-profit organization, then how does it cost them $6.50 to send a bulk-shipped piece of paper to each of the colleges of my choice? How does it cost an additional $23 to send this piece of paper in "two business days" rather than "3 to 5 weeks"? Is that piece of paper lined with gold? Is it going to be making a quick stop in the Bahamas? *Another thing I dislike about the SAT: How does your ability to memorize vocabulary that no-one in the real world uses determine your ability to perform in college? Perhaps the SAT is emphasizing the worth of adding some extra "padding" to an essay the night before its due. <end flame> Oh, and since everyone else is giving theirs, 690 verbal, 660 math, taken junior year. ACT: first try (also junior year): 29, second try: 34 |

Exactly what were your results in the various areas of the Verbal test, Jimmy? I had a 95% percentile in Critical Reading, a 75% in Sentence Completion, and a 55% in Analogies. My Verbal score was 630.
I'm a highschool dropout (got my GED), and I never took any Latin. |

I suggest you take the SAT again if you did that poorly on the verbal section. The first time I took the test, I got a 480 verbal and improved 90 points to a 570 the second time after studying more vocabulary. Even though colleges do, for your own personal well-being, try not to view the verbal portion as a true test of intelligence. Memorizing the meanings of hundreds of words that you'll never use doesn't make you a smarter person IMO.

I got a 660 verbal and 560 math, but I was also half asleep for the SATs.
Now, the ACT I was awake for. First try: 31. I like the ACTs better. ![]() |

On the PSAT I got a 750 verbal and 610 math...
On the SAT I scored 710 verbal and 670 math... Didn't study beforehand for either, I probably would have done better a second time, with studying, etc., but it doesn't matter really, I got accepted to the school I applied to. Unlike most of you guys, I think I only read a handful of books (required reading included) in my years of HS. I did read a lot of books in elementary school, but I don't know if that would carry over without use. No latin class, the high school I went to didn't even offer it - But we did have a water polo team ![]() Sorry if this is a little unclear. I just got back from vacation and I'm exhausted. Probably not helped by being in transit most of the day - left at 7:00 this morning to go to Newark airport, flew back to Orlando by way of Clevelend ![]() |

I had a 780 in the verbal (only 550 in math though) and my school was crap...I probably wouldn't know Latin if it bit me on the leg, and we had no honors or AP classes at all. I just read a LOT of books--mostly just fantasy novels though.
Had a 32 on the ACT...my reading comp score was a 36, science and english were 34s, but that darn math stuff was a low 20-something. >_< I just took the GRE a few weeks ago and got a 660 on the verbal part and a 390 on the math...apparently college made me dumber. -_- |

Well, since we're getting specific, and I enjoy bragging my small, unimportant successes, I got an 800 on the verbal and a 550 on the mathematics.

I don't agree that Latin is necessary to do well, seeing as I did not. Deduction, strategy, and reading are what do the trick. Irony is that I'm far better at math than verbal, I made it to the fuckinn American Invitational Math Exam and scored higher than anyone in my school history there. Meanwhile I get 80 points off on perhaps the easiest math test ever. Basic geometry and algebra, how did I miss any? I'm pissed at myself for that one. -B |
