I feel motivated a bit by the recent alleged killings of Saddam's sons.
I would just like to hear what is you take on the issue of Iraqi insurgency. For the most part military/police actions of the US Army are geared towards taking out a few leftover Baath party leaders, maybe Saddams secret police, Saddam's intelligence services, military leadership from Army and on. But how you you see ( in percentages or parts or whatever ) the breakdown of the insurgents that are currently ambushing US troups? What parts are Islamic radicals ( border control is AFAIK inexistent ). I assume due to the similar language and culture a mujahadeen style fighter could travel into and throughout Iraq under our troop's noses. I assume for the average US grunt, picking out an Algerian in Iraq who may be organizing some sort of a terrorist cell would be really hard on some desert checkpoint. Also, what part could some criminal element lead. Local criminals, I assume, prefer dealing with domestic anarchy rather than US imposed order. Could there be a part of them supporting insurgents with money and arms? Also, in light of threatening Iran, do you believe the insuregency could quickly spread to the Shiite parts? I belieeve that Iran want to appease the US and play it safe so they are keeping their own cells and clerics in check. If Iranian leaders start feeling anxious about US forces, IMO, they could very easily ramp up a similar campaign in the Shiite-dominated, south part of Iraq. Could we easily see an explosion of violence there if USA tries to get more agressive with Iran? Also, what part would you give various nationalistic or religious grasroots organizations role in the whole thing. How much of it does tratment of normal Iraqis play? Daily searches and checkpoints. Our people are rightly jumpy and may be really afraid when conducting such operations, it is hard to discriminate between normal people and terrorists out to get you. US troops have to approach everyone with caution and overwhelming force. On the other hand, this keeps alienating people, angering communities. How would you feel if someone broke down your door at 3 am and started shouting in a strange language, throwing you around, hearding your family, shouting... I am quite sure more than few jaws have met the rifle butt in those types of operations that we will ever hear. What is your take on the whole thing? Does a new Democratic president ( if elected ) have the luxury of simply taking the army home and leaving the whole country to anarchy and most likely, partition, civil war and a new theocratic regime? Can we really simply walk away? And if we can not, what do we do with our people beeing shot at? Just accept it as a risk and a hazzard of service? In short, is the "Saddam loyalist" line from our news crap, truth or what else? |
