My friends do know. This is probably why I am offered so many prayers. Suzanne

On analogy, once you know a person is an atheist, it would be a token of basic respect to avoid saying such a thing as "I'll pray for you". Atheists too have feelings that shouldn't be hurt.

Suzanne,

So, your friends know you are an atheist, but still offer their prayers? Perhaps because as an atheist you need more help from God?

Yes, I am sure they think I need the extra help from God. I suppose to keep me out of Hell, they pray for my soul.

Tell them you aren’t interested in Heaven because of all the “good Christians” that will be there – presumably Mr. Jerry Falwell, James Dobson, Fred Phelps, some of the more insidious Popes and Catholic Saints, or just the damned boring, gossipy Church bitties, nuns, priests, and yadda, yadda, yadda.

You want to go where the party people are gonna be (if you have to spend eternity somewhere) and further more you would rather burn in hell with the likes of Robert Ingersoll, Isaac Ismanov, Albert Einstein, maybe talk philosophy with Spinoza. shack up with Voltaire etc, etc, etc, … just think of all the really wonderful people occupying the hellish ranks! Why chose a sanitized, lobotomized, hymn singing, ass kissing, piety of Heaven?? Tell them NO THANKS!

Plus, if God is really interested in saving your soul from eternal Hell Fire then perhaps he could do a bit better job with his Earthly representatives! His PR team sucks rocks!!

Bedited to add: How could I forget all the awesome Infidel men and women sharing hell with ya? There will be hot babes, and handsome men a plenty for everyone. Heaven ... schmeaven!

If they tell you they pray for you because you're an atheist, that's offensive in my opinion. But try to pity them instead of being angry at them. They are victims of a con.

For those of you who think offering a prayer is an adequate, thoughtful gesture: What if everyone instead said "I'll keep my fingers crossed for you." Would that be comforting to you? Is it the thought that counts? Or would that be unhelpful since you don't really believe that finger-crossing is useful?

I used to have a close friend that was a devout fundy (her ambition in life was to become a nun and convert the natives in darkest Africa) with whom I'd have rip-roaring theological arguments with. One night she told me (very seriously) that she prayed for my soul every day even though she knew I was guaranteed a spot in hell as an atheist.
After I lit into her, it was probably one of the last times I ever spoke with her.

Hope you dont mind. But i just used this quote in my signature line on another board with a flood of fundies. Should be amusing.

I'm looking forward to the hate mail I will be receiving.

Thanks :notworthy
