Hey, thanks, Magus, you reminded me of some other things he's credited with doing.

He created the protection racket. (Worship me, or burn forever)
He sends people to hell.
He abandoned Jesus just before death.
He hardened Pharoh's heart in the Moses stories, ensuring that he would have a reason to kill all the firstborn. (see Ohio_Infidel's post)
He destroyed Sodom & Gommorrah (sp?)

Oh, and the things Ohio_Infidel mentioned.

You also need to remember that the Jews were originally polytheistic, and the plural "Elohim" is used in the early books.

So I'm not sure what YHWH did on his own.

How-D NonHomogenized. Jose Flanders says: buenos-ding-dong-didly-dias!

Some quick answers from a more friendly perspective.

He created the protection racket. (Worship me, or burn forever)
Ever see that part in the movie where the protaganist says to the fair damsel as he's pulling her out of the water from a helicopter: "Grab my hand, grab my hand or you'll drown!" (Apply a Sly Stallone accent for effect). Same deal with the "racket"

He sends people to hell.
Can you imagine being around a God you never believed in, around a bunch of people you never liked, doing things you've always thought were dumb? the Gates of Hell are locked from the inside.

He abandoned Jesus just before death.
God is Holy. Jesus became sin for us. God "turned away" from Jesus for the first and last (temporary) split of the Godhead.

He hardened Pharoh's heart in the Moses stories, ensuring that he would have a reason to kill all the firstborn.
Romans 9. Pharoah hardened his own heart first. See, most people would be coerced into believing after so many divine interventions, but Pharoah was particularly convinced of his own coolness. God eventually tired of his stubborness and locked him irrevocably into his original chosen path to demonstrate God's power to the nations by humbling the then-greatest man-god, Ramses II.

He destroyed Sodom & Gommorrah (sp?)
For not having 10 good men between them. Wow. I'm glad the doctor lances malignant growths when there is not 10 good cells amongst cancerous tissue--if you let it alone it might spread to the rest of the body. And we don't want that. Yikes.

I'd write more but I gotta jet

Regards,
BGiC

Yeah, actually I do remember that movie. I also remember the damsel in question was a mermaid.

Exactly. God gives us a choice between an eternity of mental torture or an eternity of physical torture. Not being tortured is not an option. Not existing is not an option. And you worship this asshole?

Your statement has been modified for increased accuracy. Have a nice day.

I really don't know why you're referencing Romans 9, since it makes explicit that God decides arbitrarily who he will have mercy on before they are even born, and also that the whole deal with the Pharoh was so that God could show off his power. Here are some lovely quotes:

Romans 9:11 - For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth.

9:15 - For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion

9:17 - For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.

But let's go back to Exodus for a moment and get the original story:

Ex. 4:21 - And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.

So it seems even before God sent Moses he had plans to harden the Pharoh's heart, with the specific intent that he would NOT let the people go.

Ex. 7:3 - And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.
7:4 - But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you, that I may lay my hand upon Egypt, and bring forth mine armies, and my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.

Looks like Romans got it right: God really did do this just so he could have an excuse to show off.

Ex. 7:13 - And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

Yep. First strike: God. As you will observe, this was before the pharoh did any hardening of his own. And this pattern continues: Ex. 9:12, 10:1, 10:20, 10:27, 11:10, 14:4, and 14:8. God's a real prick, ain't he?

In a world where a guy who sends his daughters out to be RAPED (specifically: Lot) is considered righteous, I would rather there not be ten righteous men in those cities. But hey, don't let my sense of morality get in the way of worshipping a a mass murderer.

The analogy fails, because your demon of a god is the one who created eternal hell in the first place. And he put the forbidden fruit in the garden too.

So far we have:

2. Killing everyone and all life on earth, save that one lucky boatload of people and animals on Noah's Ark.

What else is he credited with doing directly?

I'm not an atheist 55. I guess we could add that he had "immaculate" sex with another mans wife though.

But in no way is this remark to infer that the Virgin Mary or the offspring of the Immaculate Conception, bear any guilt in this affair, they are of course blameless. How could Mary refuse God's will after all, the omnipotent one was a hard guy to resist by definition. And his boy (himself?) couldn't be held to blame, for he had no control over who his parents were and how they got together. There are no illegitimate children after all, only illegitimate parents.

And:

1. Jonas (or is it Jonah?) and the whale
2. Egypt Exedus mass murder stuff
a. red sea parting
3. tower of Babel
4. Healing people (if you consider Jesús God)

I can see 2.a, the parting of the red sea as a direct act, but I'm not too sure about the other examples. Perhaps a few more details are in order.

I can see 1, 2, 3 and 5. But I think 4 is more in line with his influencing someone to do something as opposed to doing something directly.

After the creation, everything else quoted here is pretty negative. He created a flood that wiped out everyone save that lucky boatload. A little "immaculate" sexual romp with another mans wife that resulted in a love child, and a lot of death and destruction after that. Hum, interesting. There must be some more good stuff he did directly, right?
