The standard reply that you will get for this one is that Christ fulfilled the old covenant (they have this nifty blood obssessed doctrine). Most of the Christians that I have met do not believe that they are bound to the old laws. They sort of pick and choose what they believe is still valid.

didn't jesus go out of his way in one line in the new testament to assure the pharisees that he wasn't here to do away with the old laws? in fact, didn't he say that "not one jot or tittle of the law" would disappear?

The laws are needed for the conviction of sin and serve a purpose only until they convict us of sin. It is in seeking to be justified that we are set free form the law and this is when they become redundant.

My ancient dusty KJV has it as follows:

Quote:
Deuteronomy 5.8
Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
Kind of makes you wonder how the Pope justified having that honkin' great mural of God and Adam painted in the Sistine chapel...

I'm sure that, contextually speaking, it relates to the worship of images or graven idols. Which is why there is no church in the world that contains paintings or statues of God or Jesus.

Whenever there is an uncomfortable OT commandment, the most typical fundamentalist Christian response is, "Christ fulfilled and freed us from the Law." Basically, if you're a Christian, you don't need to follow anything the OT says. Your job is just to get saved and stay that way.
