The standard reply that you will get for this one is that Christ fulfilled the old covenant (they have this nifty blood obssessed doctrine). Most of the Christians that I have met do not believe that they are bound to the old laws. They sort of pick and choose what they believe is still valid.

didn't jesus go out of his way in one line in the new testament to assure the pharisees that he wasn't here to do away with the old laws? in fact, didn't he say that "not one jot or tittle of the law" would disappear?

Whenever there is an uncomfortable OT commandment, the most typical fundamentalist Christian response is, "Christ fulfilled and freed us from the Law." Basically, if you're a Christian, you don't need to follow anything the OT says. Your job is just to get saved and stay that way.
