Oh, piffle. That barely nudged the needle on my flame-o-meter.

I once criticized astrology strongly on usenet, and pointed out that you had to be really, really stupid to believe in it. That was a flame.

In reply, I got
  • accused of being a bigot who wanted to burn astrologers in ovens
  • threatened to have my jaw broken
  • detailed descriptions of all the things they were going to do while raping my wife
  • plans to 'rescue' my children by kidnapping them...apparently, after taking them to disneyland, my daughter was going to be employed in the porn industry
  • my phone number posted, with the suggestion that 2AM was a good time to call me (we did get a few breathers, for about a week)
  • my home address posted, with the pseudo-legalistic claim that since I used "fighting words", anyone could justifiably drive over and beat me up
  • e-mail sent to my employer, claiming that I was having sex with my male students
  • the suggestion that I should be shot in the head while driving home, and everyone would think it was just a routine carjacking
Now that is flaming.

The only people I've found worse than astrologers for raw irrational hatred and ridiculous threats are holocaust deniers. I think it's a symptom of detachment from reality, which is a prerequisite for both.

Bear, it seems to me your words hit home and struck some deep-seated insecurity. If you were to capitalize on that fact, there is a possibility you could have many hours of enjoyment.

Holy Freakin' Fuck, pz!

Did you take any legal actions against these miscreant loons?

My impression of astrologers would seem to conflict with your assessment. I always viewed them as peaceful new-age hippie types - decietful and silly, but hardly threatening.

No. It was primarily one guy, and as you can guess, he was thoroughly deranged. He was also just a raving loudmouth.

Do you challenge their conceits? These people were totally wedded to their delusions.

Well, most of the time I tell them that I don't buy it, and leave it at that.
