"Best" to me means the best experience I had. Subsequent games may have been technically better but provided less of a "wow" factor.

FPS: Quake/QuakeWorld with Threewave CTF
RPG: Ultima IV
RTS: Total Annihilation
Chess Game: Fritz
Space Combat: Wing Commander

FPS: Deus Ex
D&D RPG: Baldur's Gate II
Other RPG: Morrowind
MMORPG: Only played EQ; was no more entertaining that hanging out with the same people in on-line chat...
Horror: X-Com UFO Defense (Sure, its an alien invasion but I'm putting in this category 'cause it kicked so much ass)
Adventure/ Puzzle: King's Quest Series (until the last one -- stinky)
Sports: Tony Hawk Series (Console, of course. I love PC gaming, but you can't beat the console for sports games, imo)

And the other two major categories:

TBS: Civilization II (Though crappy AI is all that keeps Master of Magic from winning the category)
RTS: None. Lasso 'n Throw just isn't my cup of English Breakfast

Wow, there are so many great games that have been made through out the years... One of my first, and by far my favourite: The Secret of Monkey Island. I still get chills during the opening credits.

Grim Fandango is another engrossing adventure.

Sim City 2000 held my attention for about 2 years straight, but I must say, Rollercoaster Tycoon rivals it for the title of best sim.

RTS would have to go to Age of Empires, while turn-based is undoubtedly Civ 2.

Unreal Tournament takes the cake for best FPS, but back in the day it was Heretic all the way.

I cannot post to this thread without paying respect to the original Lemmings, Operation Neptune and Gizmos & Gadjits.

Hmm... I'm nowhere near as obsessive about games as I used to be. I rate games according to how much I enjoyed them when they came out.

Best game I'm playing right now: Freecell

FPS: Doom 2
RPG: Diablo or Baldur's Gate 2Strategy: Civilization
RTS: Dune 2 or Warcraft 2
Sports: any Championship Manager game (Ok so I'm a footie fan)
...Don't play any of the other categories.

Best obscure game nobody's ever heard of: Planet's Edge

Joel

Edit: PC gamer since 1987 when the likes of Sopwith, Castle and Ladder were my all-time favourites.

MON DIEU I totally forgot about Quest for Glory. 1 and 3 are some of my favorite games ever made. I dont' think they are RPGs really, more of adventure games. But they certainly win that catagory.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who thinks that.

Oh, and I also like to nominate UFO Defense for best something. It fits into a lot a of categories...

FPS: Half-Life (But I haven't played Deus Ex)
RPG: Fallout 2 or Torment, they are both damn good
MMORPG: None
RTS: Dune 2
TBS: Orion II
Horror/Adventure: Prisoners of Ice
Sports: They all suck

I've been a PC gamer since about 1992. I'm not playing anything at the moment, I'm just waiting for Orion III. *drooling*
