Dear Bumble Bee Tuna:

Correction.

George W. Bush is not the president.

He is a usurper.

Ditto God (or god), most likely--at least according to the Gnostics, who held that Yahweh was an evil demiurge who created this world without quite knowing how. It is our job, they say, to escape it.

This grammatical curiosity is found in the bible. It used in the place of YHWH. Christians don't like to admit that god has a name, because it de-mystifies him, and we can't have that, can we? Of course, the situation is different for Jehovah's Witnesses.

Good to know! Also, I've wondered is "Yahwey" pronounced "ya-vey" (like "ja" in german then "way" with a v instead of w")?

Arken:
“Think of it this way... there's people named Guy and there's just a person who's a guy.”
“On the other hand, capitalizing the 'h' in 'him' when referring to God is just weird.”

I think we don’t need to capitalize god. It’s not a name, it’s not a title. It’s just one of many fictional characters from religion.

Capitalizing “h” in “him” is just ridiculous. It reminded me “Analyze this”:
- Did you talk to the guy?
- What guy?
- The guy with the thing.
- What thing?

I wish we would hear a dialog like this:
- Did you pray to God?
- What is god?
- The God, you know, from religion.
- What is religion?

Well, eventually, humanity will forget about this “guy” with his “thing” and move on.

Cheers.

That's because some early bible scholars were from the German speaking countries.

A lot. If it is out of respect that the name is capitalized, then I wouldn't want to.

The proper name argument IS valid, but as Magus shows, there is a possiblity that the convention could be mistaken as a sign of respect. I shall henceforth break the proper name convention in this case to avoid any possible misunderstanding about my low opinion of such delusions.

I assume you would also grant that ability to show respect or not to be applicable in all other cases as far as capitalization.

For example==I could say President George Washington, but president abraham lincoln and president george bush and that would be quite acceptable to you as my personal choice and right to do so ---Correct?
