This is a little off topic but I find it very troubling that the welfare reformers believe that a minimum wage job working 15 to 20 hours a week is a vast improvement over being on the public rolls.

When 'Dubya' was running for office in 2000, it was often stated that compassionate conservatism was a belief Bush held. From what I understand, it means that 'compassionate conservatives' seek to help the vulnerable or poorer elements of society. How exactly?
You missed the bus.

"Compassionate conservatism" was a Karl Rove attempt to deflect attention from George Dubya Cokesnort's abysmal record on schools and social programs while governor of Texas.

Edited to add - a one term governor in a state where the majority power is vested in the Lt Governor - and Dubya was reknowned for going home at 4pm or 5pm while governor. So basically Cokesnort has no practical experience in running a country, and is using this nation to gain his "on the job experience" in civics. Gee - and all along I was thinking that the job "President of the United States" wasn't really an entry-level job!

"Compassionate conservatism" wasn't intended to live past the 2000 election, silly meritocrat.

"Compassionate conservativism" is an oxymoron.

It is spin at it's finest. Only this, and nothing more.

Mebbe they were thinking compassionate in a Reverse Robin Hood kind of way.

Like "Yes sir mister Millionaire, I really understand that all those employees are stealing valuable profit from you."

I bet you they are compassionate about the issue of actually taxing the rich, paid overtime ( as if ovetime actually existed ), paid benefits and on. damn burden on the billionaires! Imagine the impudent slobs actually wanting to be paid!!!! What is the world comming to!

Or perhaps their version of compassion is to idly wonder why the poor choose to live that way...

Default the Mother of All Oxymorons

yes indeed it's all about lipservice ... for instance, the Shrubs big open heart on the Aids uhh uhh issue in the Dark Continent ...on one hand they see him as this Messiah ... we know he's cutting the budget for Aids in half.
Compassion ... my dad was the epitomy of the Republican definition... he thought Attila the Hun was a Flamming Liberal... you can trust a Republican to Shoot the Wounded...in there compassion.
Conservative...= "trickle down"

Heart felt like the speech Rummsfeld made about the waste of having draftees... they were dead weight and useless in Viet Nam or where ever... Brownshirt Compassion: a proper Junta holds the Professional Military in control ... no derelict draftees

Compassionate Conservatism means being compassionate to conservatives.

It means taking the Democratic agenda and still calling oneself a conservative. It is not a contradiction in terms but when it means changing public policy and government spending to make it more "compassionate" with taxpayer money it does contradict conservative impulses.

From a speech he gave a little over a year ago in Silicon Valley.

"Government cannot solve every problem, but it can encourage people and communities to help themselves and to help one another. [Translation: Don't look to the Federal Govt for help anymore] Often the truest kind of compassion is to help citizens build lives of their own. I call my philosophy and approach "compassionate conservatism." It is compassionate to actively help our fellow citizens in need. It is conservative to insist on responsibility and on results. And with this hopeful approach, we can make a real difference in people's lives. [Translation: If you don't get another job before your unemployment and savings runs out, tough.]

Clue phone: the current administration is not following anything *remotely* like the Democratic agenda.
