Post Robert Byrd: The Truth Will Emerge

Probably the best speech by any politician in a long time.

Quote:
Presently our loyal military personnel continue their mission of diligently searching for WMD. They have so far turned up only fertilizer, vacuum cleaners, conventional weapons, and the occasional buried swimming pool. They are misused on such a mission and they continue to be at grave risk. But, the Bush team's extensive hype of WMD in Iraq as justification for a preemptive invasion has become more than embarrassing. It has raised serious questions about prevarication and the reckless use of power. Were our troops needlessly put at risk? Were countless Iraqi civilians killed and maimed when war was not really necessary? Was the American public deliberately misled? Was the world? What makes me cringe even more is the continued claim that we are "liberators." The facts don't seem to support the label we have so euphemistically attached to ourselves. True, we have unseated a brutal, despicable despot, but "liberation" implies the follow up of freedom, self-determination and a better life for the common people. In fact, if the situation in Iraq is the result of "liberation," we may have set the cause of freedom back 200 years.

I'm not always a Robert Byrd fan, but I really like this. Finally a Democrat with the balls to talk about what's really going on.

I hope he stays away from small planes.

It's really amazing how spineless most Democrats have become.

After their rout in 2002, you would think they would realize that the way to lose is to go along with the Repubs.

True. It's like the same reason "New Coke" failed. If people wanted a pepsi, they would just buy a pepsi.

It was an awesome speech -one that I hope is massively forwarded to F&F because it won't get much coverage on the networks. Maybe some newspapers will reprint it.

Finally a democrat stands up with enough backbone to call it how he sees it. This could, if Byrd doesn't find himself at the opposite end of a tragic accident, be the start of many more people coming out to say what they feel needs to be said. I hope it spreads to congress and eventually out to the presidential candidates.

True, the Dems are a lesser of evils but anything is better than the Disciples of Strauss.

Of course it won't get press. It's not fucking American Idol. The dissenters' opinions about the outcome of the Iraq invasion have proven correct but nobody wants to hear it. They wan't their god damned reality TV. So what if we didn't find WMDs, kill Saddam, or even approach putting a dent in terrorist activity. All we've done is stick our pecker in a hornets' nest.

This isn't the first time he's stood alone in opposition. He ripped this war plan apart many times from the floor of the senate.

Check it out

The speeches in February were especially good.

I never thought I'd see the day when ex-klansman, "never met a pork bill he didn't like" Robert Byrd would attain the status of America's conscience. I am truly depressed.

On the plus side, I heard a rumor that the government is going to send O.J. Simpson in to search for the real weapons of mass destruction.
