Default American orchestras on the downhill?

I read this article about Boston Symphony and hell, since it's from Boston Globe Online, Gawd knows whether it is biased or not:

Classical music making is less melodious elsewhere. Eight orchestras, including the Florida Philharmonic, the San Antonio Symphony, and the San Jose Symphony, have filed for bankruptcy within the past year, and well over half of the country's professional orchestras have downsized or run deficits during the past two years, according to McAuliffe.

The venerable Pittsburgh Symphony recently put Heinz Hall, its home for 32 years, up for sale. The Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Chicago orchestras have written budget ledgers in red ink. Chicago posted a $6.1 million deficit on a $60 million operating budget last year. Its ticket sales have dropped by 11 percent in five years, and the orchestra recently cut $2.5 million from its education budget, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The economy has been bad for the past two years. Its no suprise that there would be problems. Wait until the economy picks up, they will be back. Maybe this time they will be more forward looking in their budget considerations and it won't happen.
