There certainly are books that I'd not expend any energy to read, but I'd have trouble destroying even a very poorly written book.

I think I'm not alone in seeing books as friends - they speak to us in the quiet hours, and provide us with companionship when there may be none.

cheers,
Michael

Would you destroy or recycle a book or journal which savagely libelled yourself and your family ?

Books may be many things yet they are no substitute for the companionship of men and women.

I doubt it. Information of any kind may be valuable to someone.

This post was not aimed at me, but I'd like to pretend it was. My answer is no, I would not. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to be viciously libelled, nor would I want my family to be viciously libelled, nor would I want anyone else to be libelled. But, presumably, once that libel had become part of the body of written output of my civilization, it would be of some potential value, though not for its intended purpose. It could be an interesting historical document, it could be an interesting example of how libel works, etc. If someone actually bothered to write an entire book, and people bothered to read it, it seems to me that there would obviously be larger issues at play, and this disgusting book could be useful in the study of those issues (in terms of asking why the book was written, how it works, what the truth is, why the libel interested people, why the libel did or did not convince people of its veracity, whether the work of libel was succesfull in achieving the aims of its creator, etc).

The bible seems a keen candidate. Everyone has an extra copy or two that they could donate to become educational material for the poor orphans. I have three copies of the bible, all KJV, and two copies of the book of mormon. I could definetly spare two copies for the sake of the children.

I would burn every copy in existance of both "The Transsexual Empire" and "The Man Who Would Be Queen". Okay, maybe just the later. The former is archaic and quite a hoot to read, as the author is a feminazi of the most dellusional kind. The second one is just trash, and should be deleted from existance before anyone believes a word of it.

Rant over, sorry.

I could see the books of Mormon making good fire material.
