Well, yeah, I do try to. (I wish Yoda hadn't made that a no-no thing to say!!!)

I mean, life is hard enough as it is...

It must be hard in the line of work you are in, not to get very disillusioned about humans (some of them, at least)

But at least I never perpetrated a violent crime

I actually stopped thinking I could save the human race after my first year in CID.

My darkest hour came when my best friend Jason, who years ago helped me make it through a grueling training academy with his unrelenting humor, honor and sense of justice, called me up one day and told me he was 'done with it'.

I drove to his apartment just in time to see the first unit arrive. We kicked in his door and found him on his sofa by the phone. He had put his service 9mm to his head and pulled the trigger.

He left no note, but having fought side by side with him in the decay of rotting hope, I inherently knew what his last words to me meant.

For me, I realized in that moment, that the monsters can claim me.

But, only if I surrender.

Exactly.

I'm sorry about your best friend...

I have had a significant number of people in my family die (all from natural causes). It was always a mystery to me that everyone was so goddamn friendly at the funeral - "I'll pray for you in this time of loss" was often tossed about and my mother held onto these words hoping for comfort.

However, where was the prayer in the days to come after the funeral? I recall that time after my mother's mother died - she sat in a state of depression for a year. No one called to see how my mother was doing after having lost someone dear to her. No one sent a note, no one visited. My mother eventually couldn't freaking cook us dinner, she was so depressed - but no one came to help, even when the church knew she was having "her soul tried by Satan" .

So tell me - how does prayer help? It gives the prayer-givers something to hide behind - they prayed, and that was enough. Then they could go back to their everyday lives feeling like they did something to help.
