Default Protesting the media

http://www.zmag.org/content/showarti...21&ItemID=3204

This is the sort of thing I've been thinking about for a while. Although some knowledgeable people seem to disagree, I personally think corporate media propaganda is the biggest problem in the world today.

This is because it is the weakest link. It is the most vulnerable.

Instead of protesting the war, or globalization, etc, I think the media itself, which is keeping people in the dark about such issues, should be protested.

And RIGHT NOW, with all the anti-war interest, right now might be a very good time to start doing this.

I seriously wonder, "Would the media cover a demonstration against itself?" "If so, how would they downplay it?" ????

Eventually such protests would at least get the majority aware that something strange is going on.

It's one thing to try to connect anti-globalists to Pat Buchanon racism/isolationism or whatever. But how could they (the corporate media) possibly dismiss protests against theirselves without resorting to some bizarre lie that people could hopefully see through?

I agree they are a threat. When it's so damn predictable how stuff is gonna get covered it makes me sad. I read article after article repeating that if the UN doesn't rubber stamp Bush's crusade it isn't any good and has outlived it's usefullness. Although I actually read a single line in the paper today that mentioned unilateral action is a violation of the UN charter. It didn't mention though that so is Bush's shit talking.

Link in which chain? The media may be the little brother in the whole maintaining the empire thing but it does have some pretty big brothers who know lots of friends.

How would they downplay it? There's a good book that explains how they would ignore it it's called Manufacturing Consent. Come on Emphryio you named some BIG issues that they don't touch why would a protest of "the most free press in the world" be any different? Weren't the protestors in Seattle also made to look like a big group of thugs while the police were made out to be simply protecting the public? Same thing would happen here. Not that I think it's a bad idea just that it needs some thought. I mean protesting them OK but expecting them to show that they are puppets ain't gonna happen.

I read a poll recently that said more than half the people in the country believe government is unduly influenced by big business. Do they remember that when watching the news or reading the paper? I doubt it.
As to your last point they put out stuff everyday that is full of BS and people swallow it and ask for more.

I don't mean to dampen your spirits at all but the media IMO are USELESS in the fight for progress. It's gonna have to be fought face to face one peron to another. That means alot of people are gonna have to dedicate themselves to trying to educate people on the wrongs of our system while also subjecting themselves to being smeared in the media. Just my ..02. Later.

Check out my thread about the deregulation of the FCC (I'll try to find link). But the bottom line is...WRITE YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND JOHN MCCAIN who is chairman of the committee over the FCC. He is trying to get legislation passed to reverse some of the monopolizing and he can prevent further. By May the 3 dominant republicans on it want to decide about further deregulation. We need to stop them NOW.. WRITE, WRITE, WRITE and get involved!

There was a catch 22 chain I wrote about somewhere.

There's different ways of looking at it, but for instance:

The corporate subversion of our democracy cannot be overcome until we get rid of corporate personhood. Possibly corporate personhood can't be overcome until the Greens basically take over the legislature and executive branch, (and probably get some new Supreme court judges in.) The Greens will flat out never get into office without instant runoff voting.

But instant runoff voting is never mentioned by the corporate media. (Of course corporate personhood never is either.)

Also the media will probably never be changed until the Greens have a majority. But etc. catch 22.

The media is the best link to attack. The alternative of trying to do it, one person at a time, I fear will never get the job done.

Of course the media has managed to be spectacularly silent about the continuing huge protests against globalization. Still I fnd it hard to believe they could completely not mention consistent protest against theirselves.

I admit I've never sent any letters to congressmen. The reason why is because I think these congressmen are actually aware of how horrible what they are doing is. And also they are aware that a small minority (maybe of millions?) is also perfectly aware.

As long as it's a minority they just don't give a damm. Even if the letter writing campaign gets huge they still may be perfectly happy to ignore it. (It may just let them know they need to work harder to suppress such viewpoints.)

Except for starting an FBI file on me, maybe it wouldn't hurt to write.

There won't be anything done. Living conditions of the mass will continue to deteriorate. Things will be forever bleaker for we the disposed (I'll probaly be soon). The rich will contiue to prosper while the enviorment lose it's ability to support human life. Loren Perchel and the other cold demons of Pinochet, shall revel in self-rationalizing conscienceless. Bush will have indeed usher in "the end times".

Arm yourselves and prepare to kill any fat cat who ventures away from his body guards.

You guys say some of this to exempt yourselves from having to DO anything about it. But you HAVE to do something about it. It is your responsibility as a citizen. Have any of you read the constitution and amendments all the way thru? DO so. IT was meant to be a participatory Democracy. There are others in power besides the Greens that are defending our rights and trying to curtail corruption. Patty Murray, John Mccain. There are others. I haven't researched them all. Plus many organizations. Give money, volunteer, but quit assuming you can't do anything. I know 1 congressperson stacks up yeas and nays regarding an issue and votes based upon how high the stack of letters is.

Apathy is as dispicable as the perpertrators. (ok, I'm really riled up now, but the point is valid)

If we had as much power as the conservatives, they would! They are falling all over themselves right now to admit they have a liberal bias! All we have to do is convince them they have this bias and they'll be extra careful to be biased the other way. That should be easy
