Amie, we can assume the Jewish astronaut has heard of Jesus. It's insensitive of Bush to mention religious beliefs of his own at a time like this.

Of course he could "please" all the people -- by offering sincere condolences, and lauding the astronauts' accomplishments and their heroism.

It is insensitive for him to speculate on the present whereabouts of the astronauts.

I am sure it must be hard for him, I think he wants to say the things that some need to hear but by doing so others may be offended in the process...Thats just not a good place to be...

I agree. But it is not the place for the president ( or mayor, governor, senator, dogcatcher, etc.) to be telling American citizens "what we need to hear" AFA religious belief is concerned.

Yes. Rather like some religious person popping onto an atheist board to offend people with religious apologetics in a misbegotten attempt to offer consolation after a disaster. Making excuses for superstition here is not a good place to be, either.

Perhaps Bush, regardless of what his particular brand of Christianity teaches, desires all aboard the Columbia to be in heaven. Being that he obviously believes in heaven, and being that he believes it is a good place, I'm glad he wishes them eternally well.

Unlike hardline fundies, this speaks well of him.

Hate to break the news to my very lost Prez, but the astronauts are in the general vicinity of his own ranch. It's Saturday... I guess his handlers were at the mall.

This "astronauts in heaven" stuff is a bunch of nonsense. The astronauts aren't in a mythical "heaven," they're strewn all across Texas in little pieces. It's sad but true.
